S&W bias aside, does anyone have any knowledge of the 5906?

Well the S&W 5926 is my favorite 9mm, preferring it over my BHP, Berettas, CZ, Glocks, SIGs, and Walther, if I couldn't have it I might be tempted by the 5906. Just not big into slide safeties.
Accurate, reliable, trigger has smoothed up considerably with use and trigger reset is among the best out there. Bit heavy as it is all steel but weight is generally not a factor with me.

I bought one back in the 80's when they first came out and it is an excellent handgun. It shoots very accurately and I've never had a feed problem, no matter what I was shooting through it. Magazines are still plentiful and cheap. It was my carry gun until I converted to a Glock 17.
the m-39 was a gun smith introduced to compete, for an air force contract, with the colt commander. the m-59 (blued, alloy frame) was the double stack version when they went after LE sales. it evolved through the 659 to the 5906.
my favorite feature is it's fast re-set, my least favorite is the weight and the take-down. i've seen a performance center 5905 (blued all steel, sperical bushing) that would hold it's own with a sig 210

I have a 5906 that I bought in the late 80's. It was from a special run where the flats were polished and had very ugly fake wood delrin grips which I quickly replaced with the original black curved backstrap ones. This particular gun has the smoothest DA trigger of any of my DA/SA guns. It feels as if it had a quality trigger job done to it. I have never had any kind of malfunction with it. I can't say enough good things about this gun. It is on the heavy side but recoil is negligible because of that and it fits my hand perfectly. Whenever I hear or read someone putting S&W third generation autos down, I always think that they have never really experienced them. They probably did come out with too many variants and confused everyone but their 5906, 3913, 4516 and a few others are top notch that can hold their own against any other competitors. At least that is my opinion. Best, Mike

The later production pistols with the rounded trigger guards, MIM hammers & triggers, and slides milled for the Novak LoMount rear sights were especially good pistols ...
I'm slightly biased, though, since we've been issuing the 5903/6906 series since about 1989 ... and we've seen somewhere in the neighborhood of about 750,000+ rounds fired downrange for training & qualification ... and in actual shooting situations ... without any noteworthy problems.
The most accurate non-1911 pistol I've ever fired was a 5906PC ... followed by a 6906PC & a Shorty Forty ... and a HK P9S ... but that's just for trivia's sake.

I trained and carried one for my local Sheriff's Department back in 92/93. Mine was more accurate than I was, in the hands of our range master it was a real tack driver. It fired everytime I pulled the trigger. I never had a malfuntion in the over 1000 rounds we fired in training and qualification. Out of a class of 50 deputies I saw one failure, and that was an extractor that broke. I've heard people complain about the trigger pull on S&W autos. At the time I did not have enough expereince shootin handguns to know the difference. It seemed fine for me at the time though. My only complaint is that it's a little on the heavy side. I do intend to pick up one eventually for nostalgia reasons.
Smith makes good guns. No they arent pretty, nor do they have to coolness factor marketing image ala HK but the work well*
All the metal frame smith autos I have handled have been both reliable and accurate. I dont partically care for DA/SA guns, but if I had to carry one I would consider a Smith 69 or 45 series gun

I've got about 3000 rounds of various ammunition through my 5906 and have had no problems at all. A set of hoage grips on it improved the feel substantially. The trigger is excellent and it shoots better than I do. It is a little heavy fully loaded with 15+1 but I love shooting it. Hi-cap mags are readily available for cheap so i would recommend one.
