I recently acquired this 629-4 Mountain Gun, my first MG. Nice weight and a great shooter. I don't shoot full house .44 mag loads in my revolvers (but I do in my lever rifles). In the revolvers, I much prefer "lite" .44 mag. loads. My defense load is ProLoad's 200 gr. Gold Dot which flies at about 1050 fps. My practice load is a "clone" of my defense load consisting of a 200 gr. RNFP powered by 12.5 gr. of HS-6 which also flies at about 1050 fps. This is an enjoyable and very comfortable loading to shoot from these revolvers... while full-house .44 magnum loads are just no fun for me from a handgun, these light loadings make a .44 mag revolver lots of fun to shoot without beating up the gun or the shooter. Here are some pics from this afternoon. Unfortunately, I really put the cart before the horse today and decided AFTER making the pics to refresh the finish with Scotchbite pads and a good Flitzing. Now the gun looks even better than in the pics! Unfortunately, the gun arrived wearing the all-too-common Hogue rubber grips (which I detest), but after putting my favorite type of grips on the gun... it really came into it's own... I love it!

Nice gun, and as usual fantastic pictures.

I had an early 629MG, was a good shooter.

DHart--does the ".44 Magnum" and "Mountain Gun" text come off with a light polish or is it roll marked?

Looks great. I really like the older models. I wonder why anyone would buy new when you can buy an older gun like yours. I just bought a 629-1 and am planing to use the same defense load that you are.

I have a .45 Colt Mountain Gun.
That said I still consider the .44 Magnum Mountain Gun more practical and the .41 Magnum even more so, especially if you reload.

You already saw this one in another thread, but...

...since we have established a special thread only for Mountain guns, here it is again (with a few extra views):

Curare... yes, the etched lettering was somewhat faint on mine when I got it and I'm going to do even more Flitz polishing of the gun (because I like the soft/bright look and feel after polishing) which may remove the etching entirely, but that's ok with me. I like this gun even more than I thought I would when I bought it. Gives my 3" 629 a real run for the money!
