I know there are a lot of S&W guys in here and would like some opinions. I have recently got into handgun hunting for whitetail and would like a specific hunting pistol. I've narrowed my choices down to these two...

629 Hunter Plus
- or -
629 Stealth Hunter

Are there any pro's / con's of one over the other? Opinions from members who own one? Thanks in advance!

I don't have either of those, but I do have the Lew Horton half/brother to them. Only had a chance to shoot about 400 rounds thru it so far, but it's one sweet shooter. It fills the gap between my 686 and the .460 quite well.

thanks for the info, i like unfluted cylinders. I'm still hoping some peeps in here will have some first hand knowledge.

629

Sorry But the only things killed with mine were range and camping targets. Have a laser ingraved "rocky mountain hunter" with elk ingraved on the sides. Wife actually bought it for me. It was"cute". really like it and it will be at my estate sale. non-fluted cylender and mag-na=ported. VERY NICE GUN! DO NOT FIRE A PORTED GUN WHILE TUCKED IN TO YOUR BODY!!!yOU WILL GET A FACE FULL OF POWDER BLOOM!!!!Don't ask how I know. No need for a preformance center model unless you just wamt one. Standard models shoot better than I do.

I doubt the deer will be albe to tell the difference. 6" or longer barrel will be ideal and that for a better sight radius. I say a 4" will kill one just as dead if you can reach out there and hit the animal with the 4". The difference in velocity between a 4" and 8" while somewhat significant; I seriously doubt would make much change in the results. That's a big bullet bumping along pretty good and properly placed does a lot of damage. If I were deer hunting, I'd probably use a 6".

I have taken several deer with my 629 Mountain Gun. Ranges have all been inside of 50 yards. Never fired more than a single shot, performance has been fine. Wish I had worn hearing protection, though.

i ask because on S&W's website they list the Hunter Plus as coming with an action job but this feature is not advertised under the Stealth Hunter. What all is involved?
