Today my wife and I went to a gun show and we purchased a S&W 642 for her to carry. I was trying the trigger dry firing it and it was working ok. Switched it to the left hand and something didn't seem right while dry firing. The gun would cycle and the firing pin would protrude but the hammer didn't fall with a "snap". :confused::eek: Never had a revolver limp wrist on me. :eek: Switched back to the right hand and dry fired and the hammer fell with a "snap" intermittently. After a few more dry fires the hammer just quit "snapping". The gun will cycle and the firing pin protrudes but the hammer doesn't fall with authority.

What happened? :confused::mad:

TIA

I would suspect:
1. A chunk of junk stuck under the hammer, like a left over piece of metal from machining.
pinching it against the sideplate & frame.
2. Just dry and needs a drop of Rem-Oil on each side of the hammer & trigger and working it in.
3. Broken hammer stud in the frame.

Either 1. or 3. will require you taking the sideplate off to see what is going on in there.

If you have gunsmith screwdrivers and feel confident enough to do it, follow this link:

The alternative is to take it back to the dealer at the gunshow today or tomorrow.
Or send it in to S&W under warrenty.

You might try cleaning the hole that the firing pin comes out of. Might have a lot of gunk which is slowing down the pin. How is your hammer spring tension? Sometimes the screw can back out.

I found the problem. When the trigger is depressed the DA Sear is slipping off the Sear Engagement Hooks. Either the spring that forces the DA Sear forward is weak, the end of the DA Sear is rounded a little bit that it slips off the Sear Engagement Hooks (I don't know what the end is supposed to look like. I am no gunsmith.), or a combination of the two.

Oh well. Back to S&W it goes. What really sucks about it all is this hasn't had a round fired out of it by my wife or I. :eek: There goes my 100% faith in S&W.

It might not be Smith's fault. Sounds like someone may have tried a shade tree trigger job. Hope you can get your money back.

It was bought BNIB from a dealer at a gun show. There wasn't even a ring around the cylinder.

Problem hopefully solved. Took the 642 back to the dealer we purchased it from and he gave us our money back. Walked out with another 642 purchased BNIB for $25 cheaper. I hope this one works.

Thanks fellas. ;)
