A local dealer showed me a S&W 645, stainless .45 ACP, that has supposedly been to the S&W Custom shop for action tuning. The SA/DA pulls were very smooth and sweet.

Asking price is $700.00. I see used ones from $385 - $550. Sounds like someone may be trying to tear me a new belly button. I would consider it for $550, maybe even $600.00. What do you think?

I paid $450 for mine last year. I would not pay more. Well, actually, I wouldn't pay that much again. :uhoh:

Very Reliable Gun

The 645 is an excellent pistol and has many of the solid attributes of the 1911, but it's far more reliable. The gun, however, doesn't need much smoothing up (at least mine didn't). The double action trigger is right on and the gun points very well, too. The only negative thing is that it's a real bitch and a half to conceal. The 645 should be a little cheaper than a 6045, yet it's pretty much identical. The back strap of the 645 is a little tough on the hands--it's got a cheese grater type finish--but does help if your hands are wet.

All in all, I'm very much a fan of the gun. I've seen scores of 1911s out of the box that just weren't reliable without someone working on them, so my initial reaction was that it was just a double action 1911 and would be just as subject to jamming as most of them. But I was wrong. My gun has functioned flawlessly for years.

But $700 is too much. I'd pay $550, maybe $600 seeing it's been worked on, but not one cent more.
