I recently picked up a second generation S&W semi auto. A model 645. This one was LNIB. Hard to tell it has been fired.

What a superb example of how S&W used to make guns. No tool marks and the slide to frame fit is perfect. Slide moves smooth as silk. Perfectly machined to fit the frame.

First trip to the range it put every mag into one ragged hole. The trigger is long in DA with just a little stacking. SA pull rivals my Colt 1911's. Actually this 645 out performs my Colts in accuracy and reliability.

They only made this model for about four years. probably lost money making it. It is that good. TJ

Glad you like your new Smith, pictures?

I've looked at them several times but I had/have a full stable of 1911's and just couldn't fit one in.

I did have a Smith model 59 and if your 645 is anywhere near as accurate and reliable as the 59 was you're going to really enjoy it.

One of the finest cartridge feed systems ever developed........that gun will even feed empty cases...............try that with most 1911's or any plastic playtoy.

I own a transition model.........combo of gen 1 & 2 that I carried as my final duty gun that will to this day keep every round in that 'one ragged' hole!!

I'll add that unlike the modern think autos, that if you have presence of mind to drop the mag. in a scuffle it'll keep you from being offed with your own gun.......think that ain't worthwhile......then try wrestlin' a naked, sweaty 230 lb crackmonster in a 5X5 soakin' wet bathroom for your gun!!!!!!!!!!

It does NOT like Remington +P ammo, or at least, it didn't.

Be sure and function fire your selected defense load before carrying it.

I sent mine to Novak's back in the late 80's and used it as my duty gun. I have it still. Good gun.

This has been my bedside buddy for 20 years...best 45 I've ever owned. Like my Corgi, it doesn't care what you feed it!

Years ago I had a 4505, the blue version. Like the fool that I am, I traded it away. I had read the business about the gun feeding empties and didn't believe it. I filled a mag with 8 empties one night at the range and began hand cycling them. It fed them all, just as if it was supposed to.
I took it to a one day shooting school and had a lot of fun with it. It was accurate, reliable, and powerful. Naturally, I got rid of it.

a excellent pistol! i wish sw still made them like that.
i love those 645. 4506, 1006, 1076.
i wouldnt buy a new one now. the workmanship is not the same.
i sold mine years ago they were some of the best i owned.

It's true about the empty cases feeding. I first got turned on to the 4506 from a couple articles in one of the gun magazines that Massad Ayoob was writing in back then and best I recall, he mentioned it would even feed empty cases.

After getting one I tried loading every other one with an empty and sure enough it did feed them. In fact, three hasn't been anything it wouldn't digest from the old
Speer 200 gr Lawman and CorBon's 200 gr +P and their 185 gr +P to 200 gr LSWC's. It's simple the best I've had and never failed in any way.
