I recently purchased a S&W 659, with has a very nice adjustable rear sight. Unfortunately, even when the elevation adjustment is cranked all the way down, it still shoots high. The sight is mounted in a dovetail cutout in the slide. The diagram I saw of the 659 showed a flat-bottomed sight attached to a flat notch in the slide, so I am perplexed. Were there two versions of this gun, one with a dovetail rear sight mount? Also, what are my options for getting this elevation problem solved? I've seen aftermarket non-adjustable rear sights with dovetail mounts for sale, but always for other make/model guns, not my 80's build 659. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There was an adjustable sight version, but as you noted, it doesn't fit in a dovetail. What adjustable do you have? Millett sold an adjustable rear to retro fit to the fixed sight models and it came with a taller front. The factory front was filed off and two rivet holes drilled to attach the new front. Those are no longer available. Your best bet, if you want to keep the adjustable, is to have a dovetail cut for the front and install a blank that you can file to your desired POI. Novak offers front and rear sights for that generation S&W auto.
