S&W 66-5 Wilson Combat

There was a Wilson S&W Model 66 with a 2 1/2" barrel.

Wilson tuned the action, stippled the grip strap, changed the front sight, and put on a pair of hard nylon Precision Gun Specialties grips.

These looked really nice, but were expensive.

. . . and I believe they were removed from the Wilson catalog a couple years ago.

Sounds like a great gun, but that stuff'd be pretty cheap and easy to do yourself, or farm out. What sight did they use, dfariswheel? Ya know?

I called Wilson and asked the CSR about it and she had no clue what I was talking about. She said they only build 1911's.

I saw a pic of one in a gun mag once, it was owned by Sheriff Jim Wilson. Too bad it didn't have info about the gun.

I have heard that less than 100 were made and sold. I've seen one in person, and have seen a few come up for auction on gunbroker. I believe that Victor Tibbets was the revo gunsmith for Wilson. I know he continued to offer the 66 in the exact configuration that was available from Wilson for some time, however, I don't think he is currently offering them. He is an exceptional gunsmith, and if you are interested, you might want to contact him to see if he has any still laying around.

It's been a while.
The write-up was in an issue of Handguns Magazine, which featured the Wilson 66 on the front cover.

As I recall, the standard stainless front was removed and replaced with a black blade with a luminous insert.
This blade had a more rectangular shape then the S&W ramped blade.

In shape, it looked like a larger 1911 front sight.

The trigger was rounded and smoothed, the finish was satin bead-blasted, and the backstrap was stippled for a good grip.

I have one, ordered it from Wilson. It has night sights, the whole pistol is "melted" rounded off all the sharp edges. The grip is "stippled" and it has a hard nylon (?) grip. It has a fantastic action job, I bought it in 1997 and have used it as a carry gun since then.

Wilson Combat Custom Carry 66-5 .357 revo

I was trying to research my revolver and found the attached thread. You had asked someone to post a picture of one. Well, its a few years later, but if your still out there and if you still want to see a picture of a Wilson Combat Custom Carry 66-5 .357 revo. I posted some pictures at the thread below.

I happen to have a 1999 Wilson Combat catalog. It has one revolver:

Sorry about the quality of the scan.

Just a thought, it is much more difficult to "melt" a revolver than bottom feeder. For most revolvers the melt job is really not needed, I have seen too many butchered handguns when the melt job was attempted by less than the extremely gifted smith. I believe this is particularly true of S&Ws as they are pretty much not sharp edged right from the factory. Just my HO.

3 inch 66 done up by Wilson

I picked up a 3 inch barrel 66 supposedly done by Wilson a few years ago. Not marked or with any supporting docs but the revolver is melted, bead blasted, trigger smoothed , and has a super smooth action. Very nice work.

Don't have an image of it close up.
