I just purchased a S&W 4” 686 square butt that came with the Hogue black rubber grips. They are not a good fit for me. I have very large hands. What wood grips are you folks suggesting these days? Thanks…

Your might take a look at what Pachmayr has to offer. You may need grips that cover the backstrap of your revolver to match up with you hand size. I have a set of Pachmayr grips on my smith and wesson 29 which have served me well.

Check out Herrett stocks. Bill Jordan had huge hands and designed the Jordan grip. The Jordan Trooper isn't an identical clone, but looks to be based on his design. They'll also make you custom grips based on a tracing of your hand.

Gary,
I don't care for the Hogue Monogrips either. I tried them on my M686 but took them right off. If you are looking for rubber grips give the Pachmayr Gripper Grips a try. I am using them right now and I'm very satisfied with them. Don't confuse them with Gripper Professional grips because the Pro grips have the exposed backstrap like the Monogrips. If you are highly recoil sensitive you might want to go a little further and use the Pachmayr Decelerator Grips. The rubber compound is softer than their other grips and some shooters like them better. I don't care for them but they do work.

Good luck finding something you like!

Don't know about other rubber grip companies, but I just put on some Ahrends Cocobolo Wood Smooth Target grips on my 686, and I love em! Completely different feel from the rubber ones.

Uncle Mikes has a "Combat Grip" that I prefer to the Hogue Monogrip. I believe that the S&W 67-1s were fitted with these at the factory. I'm not sure if they're still made, but they should be able to be found out there.

My second choice is Pachmayr Presentation grips.

S&W's sponsored shooter Jerry Miculek (spelling) has his own line up of custom grips for the 686

These are the grips I just put on my 586.

Look at the Ahrend line of grips

Ahrends has a complete line grips...many will fit the 686. I put square to round, finger groove grips on my 686. They look and feel great. Check their on line site out. Ahrendsgripsusa.com You won't be disappointed.

Gary O - Are you sure you have a square butt frame? I have a 686P
with a 4" Bbl. I bought last JUne - I didn't like the feel/fit of the S&W rubber
grip so I ordered a Guy Hogue K/L Compact w/finger grooves & checkering
in ROsewood. This profile/size grip doesn't get bigger at the bottom of the grip like the full size I guess you'd call it mod. target profile. I like it becasue the first or top finger groove really set the two middle fingers of the
gripping hand and the other groove is an apropriate size for the little finger.

I need to figure out how to post a pic.

Just to give you another grip idea, these are Eagle grips on my "round" butt 686. Two piece, thin on the top and wide at the bottom. Not sure if they have them for "square" butt. Check their website.

Just received an absolutely georgeous set of "coke bottle" grips in walnut for my 686 round butt from Nills. Complete with S&W logo. Pricy, but if you want the best......

If you have large hands, then you might want the grips that worked on that gun for decades - the "oversize" targets. Besides fitting larger hands and giving great control, they take recoil well, are checkered, and are "correct" to the gun.

Here's a 686 with them on it (more discussion below):

That said, my hand isn't quite large enough to feel comfortable on that grip, so I use either finger groove combats from Eagle or smooth (aka "plain") S&W target grips - the same as the checkered oversize targets in general, but thinner and smooth. The combat finger-grooves are currently on my 686, but I don't have a picture of it so I'll show you them on my 67.

This is my 686+ round butt with Hogue Pau Ferro grps with stripe cap. Got them a little over a year ago on Hogue's Aucton listed as "Cosmetic Seconds." Paid $37.48; exactly half of the full list.
