I'd like to order some new grips for my S&W 686+ - am I restricted to ordering "round" butt grips or can they have a square butt?

Grin - sorry for the dumb question.

Shows ya how stupid I can be - I thought that the 686 was a square-frame only kinda deal...

Butt Shape?

Yeah, thats whats got me confused. I have a pair of Hogue Coco-Bolo round butt grips for it - but then I see the post below from the gentleman below that got SQUARE butt grips for his 586.

I AM confused!

have to look at the frame under the grips, see pic below. Ray

My 686 is a round butt and came with wood round butt factory grips. I recently bought rubber hogue grips that covert the grip to square butt . Hogue also sells nice wood conversion grips too. Mark

Here's a 686 Round butt with "Round to Square" conversion grips by Badger.

I think that all of the newer smiths come with the round butt these days. I have a square butt 686 which is fine for me, but i think the round butt is a better idea since it gives you more options. You can always get bigger grips for the round butt but you can only go so small with square butt guns.

I don't think I have ever used the word "butt" so many times without saying anything even remotely interesting before.

If your 686 has a square butt, you are restricted to square butt grips (not a bad thing if you have a 4" or longer barrel).

If your 686 has a round butt, you can use either round butt or round-to-square conversion grips.

For 3" and shorter barrels, I prefer the round butt grips. For 4" and longer barrels, I prefer the square butt for the upward wedge effect they give under the palm of the hand... I feel this wedge is needed to counter the out-front weight of the longer barrel guns.

Here's a square butt (shown in Morado wood) with a square butt Ahrends grip, but Ahrends also makes a round-to-square conversion grip to fit the round butt... and it looks exactly like this when on the gun.

Ahrends can also supply the round-to-square conversion grip with finger grooves which would look like this (shown in cocobolo wood):

Also available for the round butt is the "round butt" grip... shown here with finger grooves in cocobolo wood:

Smith N Round butt fits in my square butt grips

I am still selling some of my remaining Fitz pistol grips collection and when my SQ butt cherrywood gunfighters sold out I found that the round butt smith is a SQ butt frame with some metal cut off and the top of the grip frame and the bottom of the Smith grip frame with the alignment pin fits perfectly in one of my Sq Butt grips. A little wood putty or epoxy is needed to fill in the gaps with the grip frame covered in plastic.

Askfor pictures of a RB in a FITZ GUNFIGHTER SQ BUTT FRAME.

Sorry the N frame grips shown are sold out so no use asking.

Like to put a pair of Ahrends on my 686 having a 6 inch barrel. I have the round butt, and like the square type with finger grooves in cocobolo. Any ideas of the price range and delivery times with Ahrends.?
By the way, if DHart is lookin in here, you're the Ansel Adams of these boards.

Frank... very kind of you to say that, thank you. And I'm glad you appreciate the pics.

Give Kim a call... he'll take good care of you. Let him know you saw my pics here! ;-)=
