I have a S&W 686 (about 1990 vintage) that is a 2.5" round butt gun. It is accurate and has the slickest trigger you have ever seen! I like the gun really well--except: Problem is that every time I fire it, the second finger nuckle gets rapped quite nicely!

I have tried the wood S&W finger groove grips with a fill-in behind the trigger guard, small factory S&W grips with a Tyler T-grip, etc. NO HELP. Are there grips made by anybody (outside of true custom) that have a LARGE fill-in behind the trigger guard that would eliminate the trigger guard whacking my finger?

Thanks.

Greeting's critter-

I think I would try a set of Pachmayr Presentation's
on the S&W 686 "hand cannon". They aren't pretty
and a lot of user's don't particulary like 'em; but they
are FUNCTIONAL. Also, they are a tad wider across
the backstrap, than say Hogue's "Monogrips"; which
should aid in some relief of your discomfort when
firing the snubbie.

Hey, glad you like your 686. I have a 686+ (7 shot) 4" from '97 which is built like a Swiss watch. The action out of the box is the best I have ever felt on a stock production firearm.

As to your question, I would suggest the Craig Spegel designed Uncle Mike's boot grips. I believe they make them in an extra length which will look nicer than the standard length on the 686. I find that they fit a wide range of hand sizes well and will improve your hold on the weapon. Its hard to describe how good these grips are. To me they are just what you need where you need it without anything that you don't.

If you want to spend a bit more for wood (and if you cc this makes more sense), you can usually get them or Ahrends grips (which some folks swear by) on www.pickagrip.com, usually for under $100.

Best,

I would suggest a stronger grip with less hand movement. With proper grip, what you describe should never happen. Even with no grips on the gun.

Find something that is comfortable to hold and then dry fire using a proper grip until it is second nature. Then go to the range and give the new grip a try.

Regards,

I agree with Round Gun Shooter. Your problem sounds more like a technique issue than a grip problem. Holding the gun tightly in the "V" of your thumb and first finger should take care of knuckle rapping.

Good luck!

are you shooting one or two hand--DA or SA. i also have a 686-3 with excellent out of box action. i shoot 158 LSWC @ 1085'/s two hand DA with pachmeyer grips very comfortably. ron
