I am trying to decide on a ccw handgun. I have googled variations of smith and wesson 686 width for an hour. Nobody has ever posted the information on the internet before, including the manufacturer. does anyone know what the width is on a s&w 686 plus, or some kind of place to go that has revolver widths? also looking for something without an internal lock, not sure if this model has one without because the manufacturer wont show the left side of the gun. thanks alot.

I didn't measure cly width but did compared a 686 & 686+ side by side. My eyes couldn't discern any cylinder width difference. It appears that the distance between the 'holes' is closer on a plus.

Either one would be plenty big for CCW IMHO. I have a 6-shooter 686 4" in Iowa. Not for CCW but for the range. Love it!

(And I ordered a 4" 686+ to leave at our Arizona winter home, supposed to be in this Tuesday! Missed not having a Smith revolver out here).

Mine measures in at 1.563". A far as the internal lock goes almost all new Smiths have them, but you should be able to find an older used one without it.
