I am looking at buying an older model...about 15 years old. Is this the model that shoots both .357 and .38SP ??

Yes, the S&W model 686 is chambered in .357 Magnum, and therefore will also shoot .38 Specials. If you want a gun that was made 15 years ago (or approximately 1990) buy a 686 (no dash) through 686-3.

Fuff has covered this but - a small caveat.

ANY .357 chambered revo can also utilize .38spl. The case is 1/10" shorter that's all. However, prolongued use of .38's will produce a ring in the chambers which ultimately could make .357 chambering difficult. It is good practice to keep those rings from building up, thru judicious cleaning.

I have a 686-6 4", so its not exactly what you're looking for, but it's a great gun. It's been great so far, and very accurate.

Good luck with your search.
