S&W 6906 manufacture date

I need help trying to date my 6906. The serial # prefix is TCU. The Standard Catalog of S&W lists prefixes but the closest to mine is TCB. The next prefix is TEP. It does list the first date of manufacture as 1988. My gun has the "squared off trigger guard much like the Sigs. I don't need an exact date just an approximate date as I live in Massachusetts and if my gun was made prior to 1994 I an legal to carry Hi cap mags.

The magazine has to have been manufactured before 1994 not the gun.

Mass gun laws are very confusing. Ask three "experts" and get 3 different answers. This issue came about when a friend of mine who attended a training session put on by the MA. State Police looked at my gun and asked the date of manufacture. He informed me if the gun was made after 1994 I cannot have the hi-cap mags. If, however, you are correct re: the date the mag was made, how would I know when the mag was made. The 2 which came with the gun have no date on them. The only marking is an "s" near the bottom of the mag under the numbers indicating how many rounds are in the mag.

MassMan, I am an NRA certified instructor for basic pistol. I took the instructor course @ GOAL. I am as certain as I can be that the gun does not have to be "preban". There is no notion of preban handguns in MA. Only of preban shotguns, rifles, and large capacity ammunition feeding devices.

The date the mag was made doesn't really matter because the only way to tell if it was made after the ban is to look for the "Law Enforcement Only" marking. If that marking isn't there it is pretty difficult for anyone to prove whether it is pre or postban. I would carry or buy pretty much anything that is unmarked.


And yes... I know about the 1998 laws and the AGs regs. Those only rffect FFL transfers not carry or private sales.

Thank you for your replies. That last one was very helpful. I believe my gun was made between 88 and 90 so I'm not too concerned. I am a member of GOAL and the NRA. I wish all gun owners in MA were members!
