S&W autos...what's your opinion of them?

Sold my 6906 ONLY to finance a Gp100 for my wife. Still have my 6946 which has never failed. Incredibly accurate, smooth consistent trigger and well balanced. Factory 12 rounds mags cheaper than many 10 rd post ban mags.

FWIW, my 6906 was perfectly reliable. The only criticism I had of it was that it shot low. Once I figured out the sights ("painted" the target like on a Beretta 92) it was a one-holer at 10 yards (the distance I practice SD shooting at-mostly). Cheaper ones can be found at J and G sales and KY Imports. Police trade-ins carried lots, shot little. Good luck. Mike

Had a S&W sigma that after a year literally fell apart in my hands. Thought never again. Then found a 645 that was ANIB and bought it, wow its a great shooter and the only S&W auto that I own- haven't regretted it!

My first impression wasn't good. I based it off seeing alot of Smiths in the used rack at gunstores.

I started to grow fond of them after using them alot. Sure, trigger pull could be improved, the ergonomics aren't for everyone.

Overall, they have been utterly reliable. I've had over the years a 4566, 4506, 457, 1076, most recently an SW 99 and the 1911.

They take abuse well, example being the 4506. It was used before I got it and has somewhere in the 10,000 round count. Plus it is used everyday, all types of weather and conditions. It never has broken down, feeds about anything you can find, and still keeps rounds where they need to go.

Wish I could say that about some of the other guns I've owned, more expensive and higher speed.

Imagine that! From a company that sells over 40 models of semi-autos!

S&W semi-autos are still suffering from a popularity crisis stemming from the Clinton sell-out. A while back I offered my nice 4046 for sale here for what I considered a bargain price of $300 with 4 full cap factory mags. Nice shape, 100% reliable. I wanted to sell it solely because I'm not a DAO fan and hadn't shot it in a long time. No takers. I've shot it since then, did surprisingly well and decided to keep it.

If an S&W suits you, you can probably find some great bargains.

I have a 3913 and a 4516-1..They are great. But, I also have a Sigma .380 that is junk..It FTF and FTE at least twice out of each mag fill. I am going to send it back to S&W to see if they can make it work.

I have a 6906 and would trust my life with it. In 5 years, it has had no malfunctions including no stove pipes or failure to feed. It has the shorest trigger reset of any gun I have fired. The old politics of the previous owners
should not be held against the new owners. All politics aside, they make quality guns.

I like the large frame Smiths because they fit my hand. I have a 1066 and 4586 I can shoot much better with either than any 1911. The 45 will feed anything without a bobble. the 1066 is ammo sensitive but works well with the loads it likes.
