Can you take a S&W revolver with, say, a 6- or 8-inch barrel, send it to S&W and have them change the barrel for a shorter (4- or 3-inch) barrel. If so, is that expensive or a relatively simple, inexpensive job?
Yes, it should be possible; at least it was in the case of a 66 I considered having this done to. You just need to call S&W to see if they have a barrel for your gun in the length you want, and if so, send it in. Including the barrel, the operation is likely to cost in the neighborhood of two bills.
The other option is to have a smith cut it down for you and mount a new front sight.
Or, you can do as I have done and find a barrel for sale, then get a good gunsmith with the right tools and knowledge to switch them.
I've done this to a model 19 S&W and within the last month to a model 29. My gunsmith charges $40.00 to change a S&W revolver barrel...of course you gotta wait about three months until he gets to it!
this one had a 4" barrel originally and now it's a 2.5"

i too had a 4 inch 19 that had the barrel swaped for 21/2 neet cary gun! cockednlocked where did u get all them tylers? i need one for my 21/2 19 nickel,*csa*
Yep, your local gunsmith can do it too and it's not too hard (don't try it at home unless you make the right equipment - it's too easy to tweak the frame). I sent one barrel to Bobby Hoyt to drill out and sleeve and after it was returned, my local gunsmith reinstalled it.
