I'll make you guess, its a NIB S&W, not on the website and as nice as they come. Tell me what you think it is.

Looks like a 627 with Ahrends wood grips. The underlug looks a little different (i.e., shorter), though.

I will NEVER own a gun with a lock in it so it does not matter. It is too bad that S&W has so many new and interesting models but not the corporate sack to market a reasonable sporting model without the lock. The 2nd amendment guarantees me some things, the right to buy a fairly nice revolver from a morally bankrupt company with locks in the works is not one of those things and the company in question is diametrically opposed to me having the weapons the 2nd grants me as a law abiding citizen so I hope that they go broke. Maybe they will be bought by a company that will respect the second amendment within reason, but if not a terrible loss it currently is not. S&W can piddle up the old hemp, first the clinton sellout and now the locks and coming are the "smartguns". They will alienate even the most diehard fanatics here soon, dust in the wind they will be..........

HSMITH - HEAR! HEAR!

I despise the locks and the mindset that tries to foist them on us. I don't buy guns with locks.

Smith can't even win government contracts anymore - why do they work so hard to appease the antigunners and politicians?

Steve

It's a 5" 7 shot 686 in the old fashioned standard barrel profile , a special run for stocking dealers (to judge interest I hear ) , not a PC gun.

Of course it appears to be illegal/off topic here to discuss new Smith and Wesson revolvers.

Ahh , photos of a new Smith always bring out the best in the lockwhiners, of course the Ruger is prettier, what with half the owners manual printed on the side of the barrel and the invisible mag ban under it's belt. And the smartgun technology was bandied about by Colt long ago without any armtwisting , Taurus has a lock , so I guess anyone buying a new revolver who is a true patriot has no choice but Dan Wesson. Leave the lockwhining in Legal and Political where it belongs, it gets tiresome in revolvers every time someone posts a pic of a new Smith. " I won't ever buy one" , so don't , but don't feel the need to tell me about it every time a lock is pictured in a non lock related thread, I won't buy Rugers but you don't see me tagging every Ruger thread with a boatload of crap about Bill ~no honest man needs more than 10 rounds ~Ruger. If I ever stop coming to this forum threads like this will be the reason.

I don't care for the locks on the new S&W. Not because they're there but because of where they put it sorts ruins the looks in my opinion.
If they had put it on the hammer like taurus then I wouldn't care.

It seems that even S&W is ashamed of the locks.

After 100 years of S&W displaying their revolvers in their catalogies showing the left side if the gun all of a sudden all but 2 of the revolvers in their new catalogue are shown from the right (non-lock) side. EXCEPT for the older ones in the gunsmithing section which still show the left side. Semi-autos are still shown from the left but not revolvers? Seems suspicious to me.

Caseydog,

I am with you. I have several without and several with. Don't ask me where the keys are though.

I find there is no difference at all with the function.

If there were kids around my house, you could bet lots of money they would be LOCKED....

I like the idea that I can EITHER lock them or CHOOSE not to.

Bob

Well said sir. I do not read the political or lounge threads because there is always someone spewing personal ideology. The original poster was excited to post a pic of his new acquisition. Who knows, it could have been the only gun he wanted and saved for months to get it. It is a shame that others had to deflate this nice persons exhuberance especially when it pertains to the gun owners, which are persecuted enough in this country by non owners, and now has to be ridiculed by gun owners.

That is factually incorrect.

Nice new revolver, Shotcalla! You cannot beat a new S&W, produced by an American-owned/operated/sourced company (again). As for that little 'blemish' above the cylinder release, my oldest so-equipped, a 4" 625, has launched thousands of rounds... that blemish only becomes a problem when I am watching the tube and cleaning my S&W's... I'll forget which one(s) are so-equipped and, try as I may, Hoppes and elbow-grease won't remove that 'zit'! Seriously, those keys are in the boxes, the locks are never used here. Not a problem - neither is the previous ownership & management of S&W.

I guess the partial lug just sets off that piece - as does the longer barrel. I bought a 6" 66, actually made in Jan of this year and also sporting that non-issue lock, simply because of the 'look'... Yeah, @ $350 from a closeout dealer, it was a deal! That seventh shot would be nice... Maybe there is still a 686+ in my future... maybe an 8-shooter 627 PC...

I like it! Enjoy it? How's it shoot? and, to all the rest, BLah BLah Blah....
Buy what you like!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To anyone that keeps pissing and moaning about the S&W locks, Look around, Remington, Glock, HK, etc, all have them. It was put there to keep from being sued. As for S&W and the agreement, it is over, the people that agreed are gone, The Bush administration has letit go. If S&W were to say that they are not holding up their end of the agreement in bold letters to everyone, the anti-gun lobby would simply use it to accuse the gun companies of being liars and it wouold fuel their lies that the gun companies are targeting criminals. The Bush administration understood this and simply let things lie. After this administration, they would be in a better position of proclaiming that it is dead since it was not held up by the government. The CEO just stepped down a few days ago. So not it will be new owners and people running the company. S&W will be in a better position to dispute the agreement. The Govt. is the one that did not hold up their end. As for the revolver, I think it is great. No one makes a revolver like Smith.

Wow, what anti lock passion we have permeating here. The original poster just wanted to share his new toy with us. No need to bring out the personal sentiments.

Hey Nice Gun! So what is it already????

Nice gun! What happened to civility and manners and treating other shooters with respect? Dennis

It is a photo of a revolver.:neener:
That is why this is called: The Low Road.

Caseydog got it. What we have is a special, stocking dealer only gun that is a 686 plus, with a 5 inch barrell, hi-viz front sight, v-notch adj. rear sight, target, trigger and hammer and wood grips, also it is not a full underlug so it is not as heavy as a normal 686. I had a chance to shoot it last night and it is smooth and accurate. It is "almost" a PC gun that costs $350 less. I think S&W is onto something with this one. Now if they only made it in 22lr......

I am glad for those in other states, but in MD on guns made after Jan 1, 2003, we either get a lock or don't get the gun. Period. Sure, we would like to change the law now that we have a Republican governor but we still have a Democrat controlled legislature and some would nuke the world (or hire beltway snipers) rather than repeal a gun control law.

So S&W either puts on a lock or doesn't sell guns in MD and we are even more limited in our choice. It's tough. Some folks are so upset, they have moved out of the state, but I don't have that option right now.

Actually, I have studied that lock and it doesn't bother me any. It can be removed if desired, the law only requires that it be there when sold. Even with it, the owner has the choice of locking the gun or not, and for some locking it might be a good choice.

Jim

Very nice gun. For those in the "hate S&W club", please cleanse your conscience quickly and do the right thing - sell all your S&W's to me, CHEAP!
