I have a model 66 no dash. Can anyone tell me what the front sight should look like? Mine is SS, rounded, with a small hook or notch near the top of the ramp. Thank you very much for your response.

That is what I was thinking, did S&W use the red on the model 66, no dash? Thank you for your help.

I believe it is the top of the ramp, it is right past the small groves that are on the ramp, thank you for your help.

The blade should be rounded at the top/front, but then tapered down to the ramp at the back. If the rear sight notch has a white outline (which I would expect), the front sight should have a red plastic insert.

The above description presumes you are looking at the revolver from the side.

there is not a white outline on the rear sight, both front and back are made of SS. i am beginning to think this is how S&W made the front site. How is this red ramp made, is it something that just snaps on to the front site? Thank you for your help.

I have yet to come across a front sight with a red plastic insert, that didn't have a white outline around the rear notch - unless it was modified after it left the factory.

When they're is a red insert it's made of red plastic, and fitted into a dovetailed cut at the very top/rear of the blade.

It seems that your revolver is a standard one with no optional extras - which the red & white sights would be. Most of those were targeted toward law enforcement bidding on a tight budget. Sights such as you apparently have were more common on the blued model 19 rather then the stainless model 66.

This is what it should look like.

You can replace it with casting resin from Midway.

Here is how:

BTW: The photo is of my 66-1, which was once the property of the Kansas Highway Patrol.
I bought it from a retired trooper, who bought his duty gun when he retired.

It clearly has a red ramp.
But it very clearly does not have a white outline rear blade.

The rear blade is the sight it came with, and is as black as it gets.

Model 66 no dash

The Model 66 no dash did not come with a red ramp front site. Front and rear are made of SS,no dove tail cut out with a plastic insert. I believe the red ramp started with the 66-1. I have looked at pictures on Gun Broker of Model 66 no dash, SS front without the red ramp, Thank you for all of your responses.

The early 66 ND came with a stainless rear sight which was later changed to black as complaints glare prevented a good sight picture. The red ramp was available on the 66 ND. My 2.5" 66 ND was purchased new with red ramp as was a 6" which I no longer have.

Pretty much the same I would guess.

(for those with sharp eyes who notice the rear sight blade is black, I did that with a non-permanent Sharpie pen in anticipation of a range trip.)
