I just bought a Model 66, no dash, with a four inch barrel. It has a black rear sight assembly and red ramp front sight.

I talked to a dealer who insisted that the 66, no dash models were all made with stainless steel rear sights and plain ramp front sights.

He insists mine was modified by some owner at some time because Smith never shipped 66 no dash models with the red ramp.

Can anybody tell me what I've got?

Thanx.

Greeting's Sir-

This subject is covered throughly on pages 182-184 in the second
edition of Standard Catalog Of Smith & Wesson by Supica and Nahas.
Yes, some first production models were shipped with stainless steel
rear sights; but most were shipped with a 1/8" red ramp front sight.
Of course, there probably were a few exceptions for special order's
and such~!:D

Your dealer is correct. It's not to say that yours might not be a very late issued 66-nothing. I don't know if S&W put the blued sights and red insert on the last run of 66-nothings. I've never seen one but not to say it wasn't done.
This one is a 66-nothing bought new in late 1974. The finish looks better in real life than it does here. This is just the 66 laying on a flatbed scanner which discolors it some. This one is almost nickle shiney.
