I have bought a old S&W Told was a preWWII That would be a M&P its a 5 inch barrel and in really good shape lets say 90%

can one of you S&W people give me a year On butt of frame their is a S that near front then further back is the serial number 8769XX what is the S its not part of serial number or is it.

I spent 400 but I think was well worth that

Following World War Two, Smith & Wesson resumed production of their Military & Police model. Production started in September 1945, at serial number S 811,120. The number represented where they has left off in 1941, and the "S" denoted the addition of a new, positive hammer block safety.

Your revolver was probably made during late 1945 or early 1946, and had none of the cost-cutting changes that were added later. It also had a pre-war "long action" that is reputed to be the smoothest double-action trigger pull ever offered in any production revolver. The 5" barrel length is not rare, but it is scarce. It is usually called a "Pre-model 10, Transitional.

Because it has all of the most desired features of the pre-war revolvers, combined with a positive hammer block safety that makes it possible to carry fully loaded, your revolver is one of the most sought after M&P/Model 10 variants.

Most of the relatively few that were made went into law enforcement service, and it is unusual to find one in exceptionally good shape, with its original finish.

At $400 I think you got you’re money’s worth. ;)
