How scarce would an 5-screw, post war S&W Pre-10(M&P)be, with an "S" serial number in ONLY the .38 special caliber, with a 5-inch barrel?

Not very rare, but not that common. 5 inch barrels were pretty common around this time.

These S serial number Smith's are relatively few in number but they are not significantly different than the Model 10's made before and after. The even less common version has an "SV" before the serial number.

You might consider getting a historical letter from Smith & Wesson.

I'd guess in 95-99 % condition it would get an extra $50.00 bucks over other 5 screw Model 10's in similar condition.

Good luck,

Mark

5" "S" serial number .38 M&P scarcity?

Well, what is somewhat confusing, is the fact that in the SCSW(Supica & Nahas)book, there is a picture of an 5-inch M&P revolver and underneath this picture it was indicated that these were scarce! The "S" series .38 M&P that I'm considering to buy, is in 100% mint condition-except for not having the gun box with it! It looks to be dated around 1947 and has the transitional long action.

Within this time period, lasting from late 1945 to 1948, Smith & Wesson numbered their Military & Police revolvers from S 811,120 (Starting where they left off in 1941, but without the "S") to S 999,999. .38 Special revolvers were offered in barrel lengths of 2, 4, 5 and 6 inches. of these lengths the 2 and 5 inch were the least common. They might be called "scarce" but not "rare." Most of these early revolvers went to law enforcement agencies, and were well used - and sometimes abused. A like-new example of a post war "long-action" that was completely original would be worth $350.00 to $400.00 today, and perhaps a bit more to the right buyer.

"Old Fuff": Well, based on what you have said above I have decided to go ahead and buy the aforementioned 100% Mint 5-inch .38 special, M&P with an serial number of S955606, since it is somewhat scarce and is so beautiful that you would think that it was just built by Smith & Wesson yesterday! It is truly "Impressive" to say the least!:what::eek:

You sure know how to hurt a guy... :D

Smith and wesson introduced their new post-war "short action" at serial number S 990,184, and that piece of junk you are looking to buy has a serial number at S 955,606, which would make it one of the last "long actions." That fact will not decrease its value any... :D

It's also a no-quality-compromise 5-screw gun with a pinned barrel, but you'll just have to live with all of this bad news.

"Old Fuff":

1)Thank you for your wonderful compliment and for the valued information!

2)It will be my pleasure to post some pictures of the above 5" .38 special M&P-especially for you to see-since I know that you have a true appreciation for these old M&P's!:evil: Since I'm in CA I'll have to wait ten days before I'll be able to receive this gun!
