Thanks for posting, didn't know S&W had these coming out. I love my M&P 40 and have been looking for something for the wife. The SD9 looks like it might get the nod.

Awful thick for a new model self defense gun. 1.29" may have been acceptable 20 years ago but not today. If they were really listening to their customers it would be thin. I do like the front tritium sight though.

Sigma with a face-lift

Exactly what I was thinking. However, I can't say that I blame S&W for attempting to lift the "Sigma stigma" that forces the asking price down so much on what are quite dependable guns these days.

And this might explain why S&W has been doing rebates and free magazines with the purchase of a Sigman. Maybe they are clearing them out.

Sigma with a face-lift
Not really a bad idea.

The Sigma is a little simpler design than the M&P and the biggest complaints have always been the trigger and proprietary rail. Fix those two items (see the Picatinny rail and assume the trigger is fixed) and you probably have a pretty good seller.

At a guess?

Wouldn't surprise me if they keep the Sigma Series and add an intermediate pistol line between the Sigma and the M&P Series. Something affordable for folks with a bit more money that what a Sigma costs, but who want a few more features than come on the Sigma.

The front night sight is a decent idea. Ditto the steel sights and the Melonite treated through-hardened stainless slide.

Interesting thought to provide an index point for the trigger finger when a shot isn't intended.

The trigger pull is what I was told was intended for the revision done to the Sigma Series a while back, where they were looking to give it a 8-9 lb trigger pull. Not too heavy and yet not too light. Pretty much in line with what's desired for some service users of the Glock line when the "+" connector is selected.

Nice to see a more widely accepted accessory rail in case some owners want to add the expense of a white light or laser.

Doesn't seem too thick for what is often seen for double column mag defensive-type pistols. It's not like it's a single column/stack compact intended to attract CCW customers looking for a small pistol.

This actually looks like a reasonable evolution of what the Sigma could have been if they hadn't rushed it. As a matter of fact, it looks like a decent inexpensive service-type/defensive pistol of common size/dimensions for something using a double column magazine. Not something intended for the LE/Gov market as much as for the budget-minded private owner.

Of course, I'd still prefer the M&P myself, for the enhanced strength of the sub-chassis and the other features, but this new model line might well fill a spot between the plain vanilla Sigma and the refined M&P for those folks who aren't necessarily 'gun enthusiasts', but are just looking for an inexpensive defensive handgun.

I guess we'll see, and the market will speak.

S&W has always enjoyed strong sales of the Sigma Series, despite internet firearms enthusiast detractors, but then the Sigma wasn't really marketed to the 'gun crowd', but to the budget-minded folks who didn't want to spend much on a pistol they probably didn't shoot much, anyway. Maybe this new model line will start to bridge the gap and attract more of the folks who enjoy occasional shooting but who are still on a tight budget.

Might be a good thing all the way around.

I like it, and will be looking at a 40cal for a nightstand peice! Really like the addition of the night sight, and I think my TRL 1 will look pretty good on there. FWIW when I first got back in to avid shooting again, the SW40ve was my first reintroduction to handguns, It was flawless and hit what I aimed at. The trigger didn't bother me as I was used to revolver mostly anyway. YMMV.
IMHO you can't go wrong with 99% of S&W firearms.

You're probably smack dab in the middle of the demographic they're looking to reach. ;)

The M&P line, while, offering more refinement and some additional features, obviously can't be sold for as little as a model with less costs involved. That doesn't mean a model lacking those extra features might not be perfectly acceptable and suitable for someone's perceived needs, though.

I remember when I heard S&W was considering whether or not to keep the SW99/990L line as an alternative 'middle' product line between their Sigma and the new M&P. It was finally decided to drop the SW99/990L, probably due in no small part because they were having to buy everything except the slide & barrel from another company. It's not hard to see that it would be more profitable to keep everything in-house if at all possible ... and now that their new flagship M&P Series is doing excellent, we see the introduction of a 'middle' plastic pistol line.

I agree with the posters that are saying this is just a new generation Sigma, but S&W wanted to break free from the Sigma's bad reputation by giving it a new name. Doesn't mean it won't be a good choice for it's price range.

Better looking than the M&P, IMO< and way better looking than the Sigma. I really don't see the point of it, though. Guess you have to publish or perish. *shrugs*

Actually looks like a much needed improvement to the Sigma series. It just seems a little weird to have a $300 gun (Sigma), a $400 gun (SD9/40) and a $500 gun (M&P), but if it works for them, then go S&W!

I bet they will have the same terrible trigger that has plagued all S&W polymer autoloaders. Once they make an aftermarket trigger fix and if the pistol is sub 400 I will get one.
