California,.....for now:)
Just thinking out load:D I have a CZ83 .380 with PT night sights, with all the papers/manual,target,2 mags, and box trimmings, which I bought new last year.I've fired maybe 40 rounds through it.Great gun, just is a itty bit:rolleyes: smaller than my BHP,which leads me to my perhaps justify tradeing it for my lastest facination for S&W revolvers;) I have a M29-3(6"),M66-1(6"),M63(4"),M586(4"),and a M15(2"),plus oodles of auto chuckers.I really would like a S&W target .22,say, maybe 6" or better barrel ,K22 or M48,or M17,or ?? to round out my collection.Do you think one or the other have equal value?Help me get off the fence:banghead: Punch line.....it would have to be FTF transfer in North San Diego county,Kalif. to work.:(

The S&W .22 would be worth at least $300 in great shape. May be more in certain areas. Dunno what a CZ83 is worth or the demand so can't help you on that.

The S&W K22 (Mod 17/18/48 = 22 Magnum) is the finest 22 revolver I have ever laid hands on and many people must agree as a lot will not part with theirs. Good luck!

Steve: they either shoot 22 LR or 22 Mag. the Mod 48 is dedicated to 22 WMR and the mods 17/18/617 etc. are 22 LR. They are not interchangeable although I believe that years ago you could get a K22 with both cylinders. One of the old pros like Old Fuff or CR Sam will probably wander by and clue you in as I'm no expert. Thanks! :D

Well, I've got both, and it would be a cold day in Hell when I would trade my M17 for a CZ83 straight across, especially in California.

I bought the CZ 83 new for about $280 two years ago. The last M17 I saw for sale was $350 used.

If you can find someone willing to trade and the K-22 is in decent shape, jump on it!

Good luck.

The CZ-83 is a good little pistol ( my S/O got the hots for a 2 tone model bad), but it doesn't come close to the value of a S&W .22 caliber K-frame target revolver. You might has well be prepared to sweeten the deal if you manage to find someone willing to trade. Condition, vintage, and options can drive the price up over $400 for the K22s.
As bad as my S/O wants a CZ-83, she will not allow me to get rid of the M17-3 that she has claimed as hers.

The 83 is a nice little pistol... If I were to buy 30 handguns tomorrow, an 83 would likely be one of them.

But... if I had a K22 and someone wanted to trade me an 83 with night sights towards it, some cash would need to be coming my way. I like heavy 22 revolvers and I don't have much interest in 380s so that's going to skew the trade, but I'd say a minimum of $75 would need to be exchanged if the trade was going to happen at all.

Steve,
My search for a S&W model 17 with a 4" or 6" barrel came to a wonderful end about three weeks ago.

I found a model 17-2 with about 98% of its bluing or more, 6" barrel and made in 1962. Unfortunately it didn't come with the box or papers. I probably paid about $50-75 too much for it, however I figure I won't be apt to drive 2 hours to a shop to see if they have a K22 hanging around. I also figure that I'll save myself and my wife $14 to go to gun shows and buy something I don't quite need in order to justify spending an entrance fee.

I'd recommend the K22, model 17 or model 18 easily. There is a model 48 that was chambered in 22mag and some have the spare 22lr cylinder. Check out http://www.gunsnparts.com/ they do have a model 48 with both cylinders Like New in the Box.

Good luck.

Steve,
Check out www.gunblast.com or www.sixgunner.com for some articles on the various 22lr revolvers from S&W.

I've seen some threads on the Model 17 vs model 18 vs model 48 (to a lesser extent) and vs the model 617. I doubt that any of them are really unbeatable for fun. Ruger makes some good 22s too. I don't know about Taurus or others.

It sounds like you have a variety of arms available to you for home and personal defense so that base is covered if you get rid of the CZ.

Kratz is right about the cost side of things. CZ83 plust $75 or so should be able to get you a good 22 revolver.

Good luck.

-Jim
