I am getting back into shooting and about to purchase my first buy. I have shot 10mm in the past with my stepfather who felt that if the gun was in the house, I best be taught how to use and protect the house as well. I have done a little research online, in stores and pawn shops and I have fallen in love with the feel of the S&W M&P40. In researching further, I noticed alot of reviews and talk about the newer Pro Series that are out and I am now hearing that the 9 shoots well also. I am now wanting some more knowledgeable opinions on these 4 models: M&P9, M&P9 Pro Series, M&P40, and finally, the M&P40 Pro Series. Any and all help is appreciated

I would go with the M&P40 pro. You can always interchange the barrel and magazines and convert it to shoot 9mm if you're stuck between the two. =)

I have 5 M&P's, with 2 being Pro Models... A 4.25" barrel 40 Pro and a 5" barrel 9 Pro, with a slight accuracy edge going to the longer barreled 9 Pro.

If you plan on carrying your new Pro, then I would recommend the M&P 40 Pro. You will have a lot more holster options and it is easier to conceal.

This is how my M&P 40 Pro did at the range today...

Nice group gglass

9mm will cost less but I went with the 40 only so I could make major and it knocks down steel and pins better.

There have been some issues with the Pro models having reset problems but I think S&W has it figured out now.

I would recommend the M&P VTAC in which ever you prefer.

Go to S&W's website and look at the new 2011 catalog pdf. NICE! I'm gonna have one. Have the 40 fullsize, 9 compact and 9 long, all good shooters, 9mm if you don't reload is usually more cost effective for training.

Best of luck on a can't loose decision.
