You might want to visit the M&P forums and check out the numerous problems users are having. It's pretty crazy how many problems there are.
I don't own a M&P yet, I'm waiting for some of the issues I'm reading about to be addressed.
Here are some of the more alarming issues I've seen multiple discussions about over there.

M&P pistols are fine
I guess the cracks showned in the provided photos haven't occur with other brands of pistols? dpierce80, Shoot an M&P for yourself before you make your final decision. In the same MP-pistol.com forums you will find many singing the praises of the M&P pistols. There is one particular post where one person put 20k rounds through his M&P 9 and experience the crack on the slide as shown above. Ultimately it your decision to make, good luck.
I own the following pistols CZ75b, CZ75bd, CZ75-p01 and used to have a Glock 19, currently the gun on my hip is an M&P 9. I've put 1k rounds through mine and am loving it. Its become my IDPA gun and pushed the others into the safe. Also, Smith&Wesson's lifetime warranty will have you covered.

P.S. For me the M&P 9 wasn't even on my radar, then I won, and started to shoot one. One sweet shooter, I definitely will be buying a second M&P 9 in the new year.

I recently got one, hooked by the rebate and free magazine deal. So far, the magazine catch has not fallen out, nor has it thrown empties at my head as many detractors say. If it fails on me, well, S&W has a good warranty program. Nothing mass produced is perfect.

Like anything else in life, you hear about negatives more than positives. This goes for proven brands like Glock, HK, Sig, etc.
The M&P is a wonderful weapon. Give it a try.

Mine are flawless reliable. I think the issues mentioned were mainly when the gun first came out. If you get a Revision N or newer gun I think the chances of having problems would be pretty slim.
I believe the M&P is the best striker fired polymer framed gun on the market today. I have owned Glocks, XDs, Steyrs, and probably a few more I can't remember.
At the IDPA clubs I shoot at around here the M&P is getting very popular.

The 45 is my latest acquisition.
I've got the most rounds through the 9. It has not failed once and is truly a sweet shooter.
I also own Glocks, 1911s and Sigs. The M&P replaced the G19 as my daily carry, although I still carry my G19 as a truck gun.
I agree with Gary's claim that the M&P is the best striker-fired polymer on the market.
In all fairness, I did have a problem with my 9c. I didn't experience the same magazine release issue that others did, but it did revolve around the mag release. The release was binding badly and often the magazine would not lock into place. Rather embarrasing to be carrying concealed and have your magazine kerthunk on the floor at the local hardware store.
I called up Smith and Wesson and explained the issue. They emailed me a UPS overnight prepaid label. I boxed it up and sent it back with a letter expressing my disappointment.
10 days later the gun returned to me, fixed, and sporting a set of night sights that weren't previously there. Needless to say, I was very happy with the service I received.
In addition, I have been told that our local Sheriff's Department (Madison County, AL) has switched from the Beretta 92 (9mm) to the Smith and Wesson M&P in 9mm. I haven't verified that yet, but that's what I've been told.

i know in one of the pictures up there the slide cracked but it was after 17,000 rounds. as discussed on the m&p forums. I have had mine for a while now, i got about 1500 rounds thru it so far and it has been nothing but reliable.

I have had an M&P and sold it to help buddy get a Sig P226. I'm now buying the M&P back because I liked it so much. It was a tack driver and the vast majority of owners love them.

My M&P 9 has run without a hitch for about 1000 rounds. The only issues I've had are rusting on the metal and brass hitting me in the head occasionally for the first couple hundred rounds. For some reason, this is not an issue anymore, as they fly right the way they are supposed to. The rust is not an issue as long as I wipe the gun down after I hold it. I have very acidic sweat though, so it's not really a surprise. I played trumpet up through college and my sweat would eat through brass and silver somethin' serious. The only other issue I can think of is that it has a difficult time ramping some hollow points when I first rack the slide, but not thereafter. The head catches on the ramp if I rack it lazily. Not a problem, just gotta be more firm. I don't know about the police force in Vegas using them yet. Most cops I know are using Glocks out here currently.

Do we know what type round cracked the barrel on the example above? Do we know the percentage of +p or +p+ rounds were used out of 17,000 fired? Is it relevant to the location of that specific crack?

I also have two the 9 and 45 versions. Not a huge amount of use, but enough to put the 40 and a compact 45 when it comes out on my buy list.

I am not, nor have I ever been a LEO.
With that out of the way, I shot a full-size 9mm M&P as a rental, liked it very much and on the basis of this experience bought a compact 9mm. It has roughly 1000 rounds through it, all of them flawless.

Shot my boss's new M&P .45 on the day he got it.
I generally like Glocks and CZs.
The M&P was a fairly average feeling pistol. Squishy trigger. Well balanced. Fairly accurate. Reliable as far as I could tell.
Overall it seemed like a pretty average pistol. I do like that you can customize it with the add on grips and the choice of an external safety.
But I'm biased and like Glocks and CZs like I mentioned.

Carrying my issued M&P9 both on and off duty at the moment, and waiting for the bucks to buy a compact. Very impressed so far, time will tell if it is reliable or not, but Cincinnati and Columbus Ohio PD, both over 1000 officers, have issued M&P's as well.

I carry 127 +p+ rounds in my M&P 9. I shoot my carry load about every 3-5 months, and have had no problem with it.
My one wish would be for S&W to make a single-stack M&P. That'd be my dream.

I think Sturmgehwer picked up the only three major issues to be found on the M&P forum at present. The locking-block failure is a fluke and it's the only one anyone there has ever seen on an M&P.
I've only heard of two slide fatigue failures related to the slide-stop, and as was pointed out, that was after many, many, many rounds.
The broken striker occurs occasionally, but I think it's been linked to dry-firing without snap-caps and disassembly without using the sear-deactivation lever (a la Glock).
The mag-drops come up occasionally still in the compacts, but not in the full-size. I've never had a mag-drop in my FS 40, and it's more than a year old now.
They really are great guns, and if you let three pictures that represent extremely rare failures disuade you, you're missing out. Check out the M&P forum (http://mp-pistol.com) and see for yourself the happiness that is M&P.

I just hit the 1000 round count on my M&P 9mm compact this afternoon. So far it's been great. Very accurate. I've had only 1 FTE which I believe was due to the ammo. I still can't decide if my M&P or Glock 26 is "the one". I have about 2400 rounds through the Glock because I've had it longer. I like both of them. They're similar but different. I'll probably never be able to decide.

There's a guy on Glocktalk who has just experienced his second locking block failure in his G36. Low round count and factory ammo. Locking blocks are super easy to replace on both Glocks and M&Ps, BTW. Not that I'm saying this is permissable, but S&W will fix these pronto.
I tend to dismiss single reports and only really pay attention if a dozen others immediately pop up and say "Hey, that happened to mine as well."
A moderator on these forums, IIRC, is an LEO whose dept issues this gun. He shoots his and seems to be happy with it. Maybe he'll stop in.
