S&W M&P Experience

Do check out their forum, this one in particular: http://mp-pistol.com/boards/viewforum.php?f=14.

I'm sure they are fine pistols, but the mag drop issue is FAR from occasional and there are new reports surfacing daily across the internet so the problem doesn't appear to be solved just yet. Many people have reported getting "improved" replacement mag catches only to have the magazine fall out again while firing not long after.

The reason I'm hanging in the M&P forum watching what's going on is because I want to get one of these pistols myself. I'm one of those guys that researches things very carefully before jumping into new technology or products. I've been stung too many times to take that blind leap of faith. :)

I can honestly say that most people I know who have them (not many) are happy with theirs, but then they rarely shoot them... it's just another handgun in a large collection.

I have a number of their full sized 40S&Ws, an equal number of 9mms, and a compact 9mm.

Three of the 40S&Ws have in excess of a thousand rounds down the pipe, and the ONLY failures have been in feeding 180gr Ranier bullets. Other than that - flawless. No failures to extract, go boom, or eject, and the failure-to-feed issues were directly tracable to the Ranier bullet shape not being 100% compatible with the feed ramp.

My two range 9mms have at least 4000 rounds each thru them. Between them, they've had one (1) malfunction, when one of them decided it didn't like one round of Blazer 115gr (alloy case). They get shot at least 100 rounds per each, every week, and wiped down every couple of months.

I know that there are mag drop issues. I know that some folk have gotten the other end of the curve, and had some hard parts break. I have had neither.

I'm happy with the M&P line.

ETA - Coronach's M&P reliability thread is here.

I have an M&P9c I got in August that I've had no problems with. Little over 1500 rounds through it so far without a hitch. No mag drop issues, nothing has broken and it shoots better than I do (which, granted, isn't saying much at this point.)

When looking at striker fired polymer framed guns i narrowed it down to a Glock, XD and M&P.

After handling and shooting them all I ended up choosing the XD (which i'm very happy with).

M&P came a close second though. Seemed like a very nice gun.

The S&W version of the Walther P99 is the SW99. IIRC, it is an exact copy, just rebadged. Not a bad gun. I don't like it for mostly personal preference reasons.

I like my M&Ps. However, I have not had much of a chance to shoot them of late, as evidenced by my flagging roundcount. You can read the thread in my sig for the full story, but the short version is this:

M&P fullsize: good to go.

M&P compact: jury is still out.

My PD has over 2000 of the fullsize .40s in service, and we've had a handful of problems with rusting (you should wipe it down, but some officers don't) and mag-drop issues that were almost all fixed by going to S&W's newest iteration of the mag catch.

Over 6K rounds through my M&P and the only problem I had was the mag release needed replaced when I got to about 500 rounds. It didn't really bother me, I sent it back and 10 days later it arrived back, didn't cost me a dime and since then hasn't been an issue.

Personally I love my M&P40! I'm not a big fan of the compacts, but then again I've never been a big fan of any compact auto.

I had an M&P compact that was ok.

I have large hands and while the compact felt nice at the gunshop, shooting it was a totally different story. Even with the grip extenders, it just felt a bit small while shooting.

However, the compacts will disappear when CCWing if that's your thing and it fired every single time I pulled the trigger.

Rumor (By rumor I mean local gun shop chatter, I've not actually seen anything in black and white.) has it that LAPD and/or LA Sheriff Dept. are finishing trials of M&P and getting ready to go ahead and issue em.

This being a M&P thread that I see also has some Sig owners on and I am really torn between the M&P and the Sig 226. I mean its coming down to the choosing the Sig due to it having a de-cocking button (that and the 226 is getting near legendary it seems), but is a de-cocking button worth $300+-?

ANY real world feedback you can all throw at me is always helpful.

Thanks,
RFB

P.S. This is primarily a range gun, as I am not LE.

I have both P226s and M&Ps. I prefer the striker-fired trigger over the DA/SA or DAO triggers.

Having said that, I'm not rushing out to sell my Sigs. They've just become safe queens for the time being. :)

Query: Is the "ranier bullet profile" a "truncated cone" style? As in, instead of being a curved shape leading from the case to a flat nose, it is a flat cone leading to a flat nose? I ask because my guns just won't feed Fiocchi FMJTC (the TC being "truncated cone"), but will feed the almost-identical FMJFN ("flat nose").
