S&W M&P...lock variation observation

Hey guys..sorry if a dumb question. Two different M&P 40s at the gun store..one has a plug blocking the internal lock where the key would go..the other has no such plug but has the square plugs blocking holes where the thumb safety would go..why the variation..what am I missing? Pretty sure neither had the mag safety.

The one with the plug where the lock key would go doesn't have a lock. Early non thumb safety M&Ps didn't have the thumb safety slots. All recent production M&Ps have the safety slots cut, and they're just plugged on the non-thumb safety models. The key lock hole & the thumb safety slots are totally unrelated.
