Anyone else want one so bad they can taste it? Maybe two? Not having seen or more importantly fired one I can't say what my impression would be in the end but except for the mag disconnect it looks like they have just about a perfect pistol built around the .40S&W round which is my defensive round of choice. Love the fact that they are completely ambidextrous. I myself am what I call different handed because I am not ambidextrous which would imply I can use both hands equally well. Instead I do some stuff right handed and some left and can't do anything really equally well with both. For example I shoot a pistol right handed and while I can shoot okay left handed with a pistol not nearly as well as right handed. I shoot a rifle left handed and can't even begin to shoot a rifle right handed though. I even tried to train myself to and I just can't do it. Just feels totally wrong and un-natural. I eat with my left hand and write with my left and shoot pool left handed, but I punch, throw, and am stronger right handed, and I would kick a ball with my right foot. Strange I know, and I never met anyone else quite the same, thats why I love to see a well thought out ambidextrous high cap pistol. Now if only the same could be said for a rifle/carbine. I can't even fire a bullpup configuration weapon at all. At least not one of the side ejecting right hand only ones anyway. I think the P90 overcomes this with top ejecting but I can't remember for sure.

Yeah I know that but thats close enough. As long as it can be set up either way. I know a lot of folks don't like the internal locking mech. and the mag disconnect and I don't either but I think I would be willing to make the compromise because everything else about the gun looks awesome. The M&P AR looks nice too but I can't see paying the premium just to have the S&W logo on an ar. Particularly since I had an AR built last year at the Predator Custom Shop and I don't really need another one (not that I would'nt like to have one). I would rather have one of the new gas piston uppers for my lower or maybe a .50 upper or 6.5,6.8. I am going to hold off on that for some time though no matter what until more come out and they all get cheaper.

The only thing I didn't like about it was that the slide release was too flush to the slide for me. It was like I had to dig into it with my fingernail in order to pull it down.

They designed it to be slingshot, a la Glock.

I also prefer my slide release to be more accessible. Word is that S&W are either making a more pronounced slide release, or that one will very soon be available after-market.

Mike

I expect there will be aftermarket releases a la Glock for sure. The sure touch Slide release is the best aftermarket add on for the Glock in my opinion. I thought from pic's that it would'nt help much but I checked out a 23 with one installed and it really does help. Plan to have one and a few other things added to my Glocks eventually. Aro tek has a nice glock package for $399 thats probably an okay deal but there are parts of the package I don't want and some stuff thats not included I do want so when I do order I will do it over the phone to be sure they know exactly what I want and I know exactly what it's going to cost me.

Oh, I forgot to say: our ordies put 4000 rounds through one of the guns in 45 minutes. :scrutiny:

They loaded up every mag they had, put a couple of guys on the firing line with nomex gloves, and had everyone else loading magazines as they were emptied. The planned course of fire was: dump the magazine as fast as possible, pass it to the next guy. Repeat until the gun choked, then inspect it to see what went wrong.

They went through all of the on-hand ammo. The gun never hiccupped.

I believe that comes out to 1.5 rounds per second, as an overall average. 1.5 rounds per second. For 45 minutes. No malfunctions.

I saw a picture of the gun. It looked...a little rough. :uhoh:

The Cincinnati Police Dept. has adopted the S&W M&P in 9mm as their duty weapon. They've ordered 1500 of them and should take delivery sometime this month. I was talking to an officer who was involved in the torture testing of the gun before they made their decision to adopt it. He's a gun guy with lots of experience and he was very impressed with it.
They had a group of recruits and 30 magazines. Some guys kept the mags loaded while others continuously fired the gun. They threw it into the dirt every now and then. After every 1000 rounds they threw it into a mud puddle to cool it off. It would be so hot, it would sizzle. They threw it onto the pavement several times and drove a vehicle over it. They didn't clean it, even once, throughout the entire test. They only added a few drops of oil to the rails every 1500 rounds or so.
The gun went 12,000 rounds without a single malfunction at which point the test ended.
They did discover a few problems though. One, the front sight would work itself loose. Also, the firing pin hole became enlarged at the breech.
Smith & Wesson is correcting both of these issues before the gun goes into production, so they're serious about making it right.
I've handled one and I like it. I'll most likely get one in 9mm (not a .40 fan) when they become available.

The gun is interesting, but I would wait a year or two - seems that new guns often have bugs to be worked out -

Like the Ruger 345 and the Beretta Tomcat

S&W is working out the problems before it goes into production? I thought it was already in production for months now or I may have misread your post. I have an issue of G-N-A here from months back with a full page ad that says available now in 9mm, .357 sig, and.40. Maybe they just have the .40 and the ad is a mistake or maybe I misread it. I will dig it up and take a look. One things for sure, if it's in Kalifornistan it will be with 10 round mags only. I'm glad I live in a state where if I want an AR I don't have to buy one with no mag that has to be broken down and loaded 10 rounds at a time, or if I want any kind of gun it can't hold more than 10 rounds. I remember one of the contributing authors of G-N-A saying in a short article not long ago that he and a fellow Kalifornistanian have a weekly discussion on whether or not Ca is still a part of the U.S. Sorry if I offend anyone but what can I say? Thats just the way I look at it personally. I like having my AR with Flash hider, bayonet lug, and collapsible stock with lots o high cap mags for all my defensive weapons. Even though a good AR with none of those would fit my needs just as well it's about whats right. Thats why Clintons ban was such a joke and why I am glad it's dead. It eliminated only what the dems thought "looked" scary on assault rifles. A post ban weapon is and always was just as deadly in the wrong hands than a pre ban or current rifle. Try telling a liberal anti gunner that though. One of the most pitiful things I ever saw was a news story the week the ban ended showing an officer firing an AR with flash hider and Bayo lug and high cap mag at cinderblocks and then it told us how "Now that the ban is over" criminals can now get these evil weapons that will penetrate body armor!! Unbelievable. Then a month or so after that someone posted a link to the INCREDIBLY inaccurate report that the Brady bunch did on the FN Fiveseven. Some of the mis information was so blantant it was actually funny it it did'nt make me so freakin mad that they can get away with their mis leading rhetoric. By the way I like that Sig line Shipwreck. Bower fears no man hehe. Strap him down, shoot him up with drugs till his heart stops and then shock him back to life over and over and he will still come back and take you out and then start taking heart pills and come back for four more seasons hehehehe! Heck he'll take you out even if he's your buddy if thats what it takes to get the job done! They really meant it when they said not to get too attached to any of the characters on the show because they could go at any time. They proved that with the start of this season. Everybody was getting it seems like.

dont worry whether or not it will be here in CA, it will be here, just a matter of time. look how fast the PX4 got here. we have higher purchasing power than say TN :p

Depends on when they did the test. Our test guns were a pre-production run (basically, the first production run, but not sold, used for T&E and marketing), and we beat the heck out of them and gave S&W our suggestions. This occurred several months ago.

We had one problem that was the proverbial Big Deal, but that was supposedly solved and addressed before the guns hit the shelves. We had a couple of other more minor gripes, too. The minor ones might not have been addressed in the first batch of guns, or they could have been- I have no idea.

Personally, discovering that that the front sight can come loose after being shot hot for hundreds of rounds, dumped in a mud puddle and run over with a car fits my list of "things we should fix, but perhaps not get done on the first batch of guns." I dunno what Smith has done with it.

Too bad all that Kalifornistanian buying power can't be used to buy the kind of guns and accessories 90% of the rest of the country can.

The problems being worked out before it goes into production that I was referring to was for the 9mm version. The .40S&W version was released first, to be followed later by 9mm, .357Sig and supposedly .45 at some point.
The 9mm guns were to be delivered to the Police Dept. sometime in May, so I would expect to see the 9mm versions start showing up on dealer's shelves soon.

Ah!

The problems were observed in the 9mm, and will be corrected in the 9mm, prior to delivery. Gotcha.

We shot the holy heck out of the .40, and I don't think they saw any problems with the firing pin hole, or anything like that.

Cool.

I do, with the caveat that I have not yet been issued mine. Based upon the moans of delight coming from the ordnance unit whenever you mention the gun, I think it'll be good.

The shooting sessions I've had with it have been good. Only malfs I've seen were light primer strikes, which have been fixed, and Pax's magazine dump...which I cannot do with a full magazine, only empty or near-empty ones.

Wow Freddie! Don't mean to rain on your parade, but the going price here in Oklahoma City is $489.99. I understand that S&W dropped their price after the initial introduction.

From my personal fondling and target work (admittedly limited), all I've got to say is... I'm impressed!

The ergonomics are awesome and they are aesthetically pleasing as well. I'll buy one just as soon as they offer them in .45 ACP or 10mm (I have more 9mm's than you can shake a stick at and don't care for .40's, except my 4006)

Anyone know if they will they be selling ones without the built-in lock to civilians or is that still an LE option only?
