S&W Model 1000 Price Check and Advice

A friend of my offered to sell me this gun and I was hoping to get some guidance on price and if it was something worth having. Here's the details.

Smith & Wesson Model 1000 in 20 gauge.
Two barrels, both 28", one mod choke, one full. One barrel is magnum, other standard.
Age uncertain, at least 20 years old.
Condition: Perfect, less than one box of shells through it. Still in it's box.

I'm assuming this is an auto, S&W also made a 1000P which was a pump.

The autos were made between 1972-1984. A 90% gun should run about $275. I handled one many years ago, it seemed a nice auto, but was a skeet target gun. I believe they were made in Japan. Parts may be hard to come by though if repairs are ever needed.

I missed that a second barrel was with the gun. In the condition you say it's in it should worth about $375+ or more if your willing to pay for it. For that I would get a Rem 1100, but that's just me. They were a decent gun in their time, but couldn't compete with 1100's and S&W wanted out of the long gun market.

I can't answer on the price. But I can tell you that my dad has one and he loves it. It's a 12 gauge, with a two barrel set like you described. He's shot a lot of dove and quail with it. The wood is beautiful, and it is a very quality gun. It's every bit as good as a Remington or Winchester.

One thing though, KEEP THE GAS SYSTEM CLEAN. Dad, not being one to clean his guns as much as he should, has problems with it cycling the low-power 2.5" dove loads a lot of times. A quick cleaning of the gas system always fixes this. Until the next time we go shooting, and he hasn't cleaned it, and it jams again. Once clean, it shoots like a dream.

I'd get it, just because it's different and practically new.

The S&W Model 1000 was made in Japan by Howa, and was a "clone" of the Remington 1100.

After S&W got out of the shotgun business, Mossberg picked it up for a year or so, and it may have been sold under Howa's own name briefly.

These are good quality guns, most owner's like them.

Gun Parts Corporation bought the spare parts inventory from S&W, and they carry most parts for the 1000 and the Model 3000 pump gun.

Last time I looked, Gun Parts still had some folding stocks, magazine extensions, and spare barrels for both guns.

My best hunting partner in high school had one and it was his pride and joy. I'll second the advice about keeping the system clean. It also had a problem cycling if the temp got to low. It locked completely up one day when we were hunting squirrel in an ice storm. Of course, so did we.

I have it in 12 Gauge 28" modified, I like it better than the Rem 1100's even though it's basically the same gun. I believe they are mall gas operated guns. The wood on mine is especially nice and it has some nice scroll work on the receiver. It's worked flawlessly for me through the years too. If the price is right, jump on it.

I have one in 20 gauge, and it's great. IIRC, the skeet models had a steel receiver, and the "regular" models like mine have an alloy receiver. My wife likes it because of the lighter weight. I also have a 20 gauge Remington 1187, and I like the S&W better.

Thanks everyone. The owner is really a friend of a friend and we've just begun to do the "dance" on a price. He doesn't impress me as someone who would let something go cheap but we'll see. Sounds like a good deal at the right price, I was sort of looking for a used 1100 anyway.
