I ran across a S&W Model 19-3 at the local gun/pawn shop yesterday. Mechanically it was in good condition, no issues.
Finish wise, someone had decided to do put a nickel finish on it and they went crazy, hammer, trigger etc... And its not a very good job.

This one would be a shooter by all means, asking price $259 OTD. Worth it?

Would having the nickel removed and it refinished be worth the effort cost wise?

I would pass unless you just want a shooter and plan to leave the finish alone.

Just a quick glance on gunbroker.com says you should be able to buy one in near-perfect condition for around $500.

It will probably cost you at least $250 to get it stripped and refinished, that plus the cost of acquisition and you are right in the same ballpark. My own experience with having a gun refinished is it comes with risk, unless you can find someone who will guarantee it to look the way you want.

I picked up an almost new 66-5 snubby for $450, and I see a good number of decent 19's around in the $400 - $550 range depnding on barrel length, condition, and dash.

Probably not a Model 66 since the OP was able to provide a specific dash number after the 19.

Nickel could have been the original finish. The original finish could have started to wear and someone sent it off to be re-nickeled and chose a poor refinisher. Or it's possible that it was originally blued and someone wanted some bling.

Like someone else said, pass on it if it's a 4" model. If it's a 2.5" then I would try to get it for $250 OTD and then as funds come available, send it back to Smith for a refinish.

If a 2 1/2 I'd make it a practice gun and shoot it alot (and pack a mint one that shot right on the money!)

Hey guys,

thanks for the input I appreciate it. I already have a couple of 19-4's so I am probably gonna pass on this one. Sad part is that mechanically it's really in good shape.

May go for a ruger mk1 they have in the shop. Its got some normal wear but mechanically its in good shape. Can probably get it for $200 or less otd.

Passed on the Model 19-3 specimen in the original post.

I stopped by the local gun/pawn during my lunch hour and the gentleman I deal with said I have another revolver I want to show you. He knows I prefer .357's. He handed me a nice 4 inch S&W model 19-4, P&R, target grips, excellent mechanically and good to very good wear wise with just a touch of holster wear on the muzzle. For $325 OTD, it found a new home.

Congrats!

Feel free to send it up here to me if you need it test fired, I offer to do that work pro bono all the time :)
