Hey guys, I've got a wonderful model 19 k-frame which needs a little love. If I pull the trigger double action all the way back... snap... then SLOWLY return it fowards it sometimes hangs up. Maybe 1 in 5 times. When I first obtained the used gun it had some pretty good gunk in the action and I've cleaned it out a few times. The parts are all shiny and nice now, including the recoil slide. There is still a fair amount of rust on the inside of the frame itself. I suspect the recoil slide rubbing against the frame may be causing this binding. I've tried the original spring and a variety of wolff springs. Unfortunately, the strongest wolff spring on the market is still "reduced power". So should I clean up the frame? Any advice on that? Or should I buy another type of spring?

I suspect someone tinkered with the trigger return spring before you got the gun. I suggest ordering a factory spring from Numrich or S&W and start from there. It is also possible that someone messed with the hammer or the rebound slide and the slide is hanging up trying to rebound the hammer. There are also other possibililties. You can try working the action with the sideplate off (make SURE you do it without the mainspring (hammer spring) in place) and see where things are binding.

Of course there is nothing wrong with removing any rust or gunk from the action. but the rebound slide is designed to "rub" on the frame and a little good gun oil should keep it from being a problem.

I am not a big S&W revolver guy but if there is rust on the frame where the different parts that move against it are located I would think that removing the rust would improve the pull/reset. I would not go crazy removing anything else there but some 000 steel wool and rust remover like PB Blaster would work well. Just get all the steel wool splinters out after and lube well. Someone that knows them better than I will be along soon and chime in I am sure. Good luck.

Once you get the rust out of the way, and steel wool fibers, get some Gun Butter, or M Pro 7 lube, just lightly apply, no need to have it running out. Removal of rust is paramount!

Take your rebound spring out and compare it with a fresh one. I suspect it has been shortened too much.

Also eliminate as a cause any binding with the hammer or safety bar.
