S&W Model 29 Silhouette

A couple of weeks ago my father went to an auction where there was a Smith and Wesson model 29 for sale. I had seen the sale bill and I told him to call me from the auction and describe the gun to me. I was looking for an 8 3/8 inch model to use for hunting. Well, he calls and says it has a big long barrel so I think it's an 8 3/8 inch model and tell him if it goes for less than $400 to buy it. Long story short, he pays $325 and it turns out to be 10 5/8 inch barrel silhouette model. My problem now is, do I keep it as is, have it drilled and tapped for a scope mount or sell/trade it. I want a scoped handgun for deer hunting so I'm not big on keeping it as but I don't really like the idea of having it drilled and tapped. I guess I'll sell or trade it, but since I've shot it I kinda like it.

Leave it as is.

Not very many 10 5/8" Model 29s were made, and if you have one with pinned barrel and recessed chambers, it is really rare.

This is basically a 29-3 with a 10.5" barrel. They made them for only a short time because they proved less than popular. Too much for most folks for hunting and the serious silouette competitors were using Dan Wessons in the revolver category.

I really don't think they have any real collector value or draw any interst from collectors. Sell it or modify it at your desire.

$325 for a Model 29 is a good price ... if its pinned & recessed you could get almost twice that for it if you're patient (although the market for that gun is kinda small).

I'd leave it unmolested if you intend to sell it because unmodified is always more valuable.



Ifn it was me I'd keep it as is and keep looking for the 8-3/8 you want ('cause you can't have too many guns )

None were P&R and they weren't that popular so it's up to you. You do have a N-frame for $325 which you probably won't see a deal like that again.

Very good deal IMO and I'd keep it - that is a lovely gun even tho not to everyone's taste. In fact if you chose to sell I'd easily give you your money back!!!

Don't change it at all!!

You don't need to have that gun drilled and tapped to mount a scope. Contact the good folks at B Square.

I have a 29-3 silouette also,but with a 6" barrel,full underlug and un-fluted cylinder.Nice gun,I would personaly leave it as is

Rem' - FYI - here is my Ruger SBH with a B-Square mount - not overly pretty but functional - and this one seems to have stayed put now well over quite some time.

I think $325 was a heck of a deal. That's a nice gun, and not one you run into every day. I'd either go the B square route, or tap it and scope it another way. I've got a feeling you'll not get rid of it, and if you do, you'll easily recover your 325 even if drilled and tapped.

Interesting revolver!

I like the 6" barrel best for toting as a hunting revolver, and my 1990 Model 29-5 (also a bright blued, full lug barrel gun with an unfluted cylinder and silhouette-adjustable front sight) has taken lots of deer.

Obviously, I've removed the front and rear sights and stored them in order to mount the Holosight. I love mine . . . especially in the full-lugged, unfluted cylinder version in blue!
