S&W Model 29 Wisdom?

Picked up a nice older model 29-2, 8" blue. $400. Limited corrosion, so I am using some home blueing on it. Pinned and recessed of course. FOur screws on side plate. Looks barely used.

Idea on date of MFG?? S/N is N48876x. Is that a N frame?

If I wanted to splurge and send it off to S&W to get refinished: what might they charge to go thru it and give it a deluxe bluing?

As good as that revolver looks I would shoot and enjoy as is! I looked into sending back a S&W pre M28 and the blue was going to run somewhere around 175.00. If you have it gone through for a tuneup you are looking a min. of $250.00 for the blue, tuneup, & shipping which is money you will never get back out of a refinshed M29. Parts charge for any replaced will be on top of that. You can go to the S&W website and go to custom shop and get the exact current price. The price I qoted is just a ballpark and may have gone up since I checked as that was about a year ago. One thing I have seen done that is a bit cheaper is having a hard brushed chrome finish applied and leaving the sights blue. The one I saw was done by Rebel Gunworks in FL. You may want to check with them for curent pricing.

I heard that "Flitz" is good for cleaning up blued guns. I would not refinish it.

According to SCSW, that serial number puts it at 1978. And, yes it's an N-frame. One funny thing tho.. that serial number doesn't jibe with 4 screws on the side plate. If you are serious about refinishing, I would send it to Ford's in Florida. Great place to do business, and excellent results. JMHO... but, from looking at the pic, if it were me, I would just enjoy it like it is!

Flitz, will make the GOOD Bluing look better, but will remove the rust and leave a SILVER spot where the corrosion is. No Fix "COMPLETE" for Neglect other than Refinising, and I would leve this to the Professionals at Ford's. Simply follow the Link.. Hammerdown

Clean up any rust, and shoot it. That's what they're made for, and they do it well

"Blue Wonder" gun cleaner is advertised as capable of removing rust without harming the blue.

Their ad copy cautions you to oil up what you've cleaned with the gun cleaner, as it's left so clean & dry that new corrosion may set in otherwise.

(BTW, do NOT use Naval Jelly on your gun unless you want to remove all the blue it touches!)

A word to the wise: Take a LOT of pictures of your gun before you send it to S&W. I sent them a 29-2 to have the forcing cone recut. It came back with the forcing cone expertly recut... and deep scratches on the barrel where somebody incompetently used a fixture or tool of some kind to remove it. Now the barrel HAS to be either reblued or replaced. I expect to be dissatisfied with the former.
