Hi All,

Can anybody help me with a date for a Smith Model 37 (round butt) with serial number BEW6xxx?

Any other info regarding this piece would be greatly appreciated! :)

Regards,

Mark

Around 1990 - dating the revolvers with the 3 letter prefix serial numbers isn't as precisely listed in the SCSW (Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson) as are the older serial numbering systems.

The Model 37 is the Airweight Chiefs Special, same gun as the Model 36 but with an alloy frame. They make very handy carry guns, and some will bob the hammer spur for pocket carry. As it has an alloy frame I would not feed it a steady diet of +P ammo, others claim it should only be fired with standard pressure ammo, and still others feel it will hold up to unlimited +P use. "Carry a lot, shoot a little" is the phrase often used about Airweights. Enjoy it and post back if you have any more questions.

I had a 3" model 37 that I eventually sold to an older lady to protect her home. At 3" it was a little too difficult for me to conceal, and she couldn't handle a 442 or 642.

Mine was a square butt, and was manufactured in the early 70s.

Mine shot great, and I loaded 158 grain lead hollowpoints at standard pressure. Plus p loads shot okay, but I didn't want to risk damaging the gun while making it more painful for me to shoot.

If you email S&W, they can give you the approximate month and year of manufacture.

Thanks for the replies. I just picked this one up for $250 at a local shop. It looks pretty clean.

My first snubbie! Unfortunately California hasn't recognized my right to self defense yet, so I won't be carrying.

Regards,

Mark
