Can anyone here tell me about converting or modifying the M52 38 Master 5 shot mag to a 6 shot mag for PPC competition.

I believe model 52 parts are getting kind of scarce nowadays.
I needed a new barrel bushing to replace a cracked one a couple of years ago, and had to end up making one myself.
You might be better off getting the money out of it from a collector and investing in something else more current & repairable for PPC competition?
Just a thought!

Modifing Mag
Talked with of one our St Police on the range who was about to buy a Mdl 52 for PPC. FWIT catagory: He said that the 5 rnd limit on the mags is based on a stop in mag using the slot and "all you needed to do was to use a dremel tool to cut the slot further down the Mag. No other change to the gun were needed. "
Just reporting a conversation - I haven't done it nor seen the modified mag.

If you need work on the gun suggest you contact S&W Performance Shop. I had a shooting friend that had a ringed barrel that they replace for a reasonable price (< $200 I think). This one I saw.

The .38 Spl. rimmed cases will only stack so far in a straight mag and still feed. That's one reason why they are blocked at 5 rounds.
Two mags = one 10 round bullseye match stage.
This was one of the reasons for the semi-rimless .38 AMU cartridge being developed by the Army AMTU back in the 60's when .38 Spl. was still king on the bullseye ranges. They would feed much better.

I just posted a similar question about converting the model 52 mag to hold 6 rds in the gunsmithing section. Hopefully someone will have an answer, I'll be buying a sweet model 52 - no dash if it's possible, otherwise I''ll probably have to pass on it.

I know the conversion is possible, I shot with a fellow using such a converted pistol - magazine. He didn't seem to have any problem with it, although the rim on the case does tend to curve the stack. To be honest, I haven't done any Dremelling on my magazines yet. I'm thinking about it; but I haven't shot much PPC lately.
I think the five round block is more related to Bullseye shooting which is done in five shot strings.
I sure like my 52. It shoots so good it makes me look good.

OK, here is the scoop on the Mag conversions for the M52...
Depress the button on the mag bottom and slide the retainer off, this lets you remove the spring.
Preferably use an End Mill same size as the slot and extend it downward to accomodate one more round...
or you can use a Moto Dremel grinder tool or cutting tool...but essentially you are increasing the length of the existing slot, both sides.
This is how it is done...

M58 what do you mean by no dash...?
the M52-2 is the prefered model if you can find one, it has the new improved extractor.
If you are going to shoot competition this is critical...
Let me know if you buy one...I will be selling a M52-2 in a couiple of weeks, I will list it here...it also has an Aristocrat 3 position sight modification installed and a Tasco Red Dot with mount as an extra, I'll be looking to get $995.00 for it ...overall it is 96 or 97%...
