I have two S&W N-frames (M610 & M629) that I'd like to swap-out the pinned black blade front sights for red ramp blades. The black blades are 0.125" thick and 0.285" tall above the barrel mounting base, secured with approx. 0.045-0.050" punch pins.

Are there pinned N-frame red ramps that are direct swaps with the black blades?

Anyone done it?

I've seen posts in the past where some individuals prefer the black blades over the installed red ramps ... perhaps I'll try posting a WTT offer.

I wanted a Pat sight put on my 686, but no one had a pre-drilled sight blank. I was told that I would need a gunsmith to drill and install it. So I left it as is.

I've done a little research since my first post and here's what I've found:

If the red ramp front sight on your 629 is pinned, then all you need is a cup-tipped (or parabolic) 0.040" pin punch to remove the pin and swap blades. Brownells sells this punch, Part #080-620-004, for $8.62 and it appears on page 148 of their 2002-3 catalog or online at www.brownells.com. The replacement blades are about $35-40 from S&W or Brownells, so if a swap suits, it can save some $$$.

Plus, you can use the pin punch to remove the locking bolt pin when your cylinder lockup loosens. You can then adjust the locking bolt engagement or install a new one, part cost approx. $6. :(

Let me know if you are up to it and I'll swap ya!

My indoor range has such poor lighting that I could not see my black front sight,so I took some bright red paint to it works great. Now in the summer the paint comes off for out door shooting, and in the fall the paint goes back on.
