Another NG386 owner. I've had mine for about three weeks now, and I've put about 125 rounds through it.
My experiences match dirtygrunt95s, mostly. I come from shooting j-frames a lot in the last year (16,000-18,000 rounds), so I'm still getting used to the L-frame action and size.
1. I find the trigger could use an action job--but I think I'll just wear it in.
2. The C&S rear sight does not work well with my eyes--(age issues)--the notch is too deep. So, I ordered out a Millet replacement from Brownells--and found the mounting holes don't match up; I have to drill another one. Otherwise, it'll fit.
3. The grips are far and away the most pleasant part so far--enough so that I'm calling S&W to try to get another set for my 686.
Depending on which frame you have experience with, you'd probably find the NG386 a pleasant lightweight compared to the 686, or a pleasant 'heavierweight' compared to the j-frames. It weighs about the same as my 640, but nearly twice as much as my M&P 340.
No real complaints--but I will mention that I find the sideplate finish almost matches the Scandium frame. And, my sample seems to consistently shoot about 2.5" low and 2" left. After I mount up the Millet, I'll check again for POA with some factory 158s--and if it's still off, I'll send it in for tweaking. Right now, I think it may just be my eyes, but we'll see.
The complaints above are not surprising to me as a mass-produced item gets ramped up in production, and I imagine S&W will stand behind it.
Overall, I am quite satisfied.
As for the N-frame 8-shot--well, I do find the N-frame to be one size bigger than I like. I have a pre-27 3.5" I inherited, and it is a beautiful gun--but it is BIG.
