I am looking for a revolver for home defense in .38 or .38/.357, no snubbies. I would like night sights already on it, or the ability to install night sights easily. I have looked at the S&W Night Guards, but they are little too pricey. Any other suggestions?

Ruger GP100. Easy on the wallet and I believe sights are easily changed. However I've never done it.

1) Buy a used S&W 686 for < $500

2) Then, buy a crimson trace laser grip for $199

3) then get a quick access safe for your night stand to keep it locked and loaded, and out of the hands of thieves or children.

Much Much better for a dim light environment. You dont even have to look down the sights. Illuminates your target as well!

If you're thinking the laser and safe are too much money, think of the liability of missing your target, or your gun falling into the wrong hands! I'd reather spend $100 on a safe, than have a child (anybody's child) happen upon it. Hiding it under the socks is a bad idea. Thieves already know to look there, and children can figure it out as well.

Pardon me, but that's absurd.

You managed to throw out all sorts of advice except any that answers his question.

Bullfrog...he did mention that a used 686 is a great gun

500 is too much though (I paid 400 for the police trade that I bought last month and it was not a great deal)

I will look into a 686. No lasers wanted. I want the night sights. Already have a safe. Kids are all grown up and serving this great country in Army and Marines. Any other suggestions?

I'd look at a snubby SP101 DOA 2 1/4 barrel fixed sight. Then you could put the tritium night sight on it (http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=541379). There was in fact a gun for sale on here with that setup just recently and it looked really nice. Maybe check the classifieds here and see if its still available. I think the owner had a shop install the sights as I don't think its a do-it-yourself job. If I'm wrong let me know as I'd like to install just such a sight. I don't plan on using it as a nightstand gun though, that's what my scatter gun is for.
