My father sent it off to get it refinshed in the 70's-80's and has not been shot since.

From what ive looked up i think it was made between late 40's early 50's. What are these going for? Are they rare or hard to find? I am not and have no intent to ever sell as it has a history to my dad. Just looking to fins out what i have.

Not encountered every day, but not entirely a rare variation.
Mine was built in 1927.
The re-finish affected value on yours.

Refinishing will usually negatively affects collector value. But it looks to be in pretty good shape. You got yourself a really nice revolver there.

Im definitely no expert on old Smiths but the good old ones in my area go for about 300 to 500 dollars depending on model and condition.

According to the S&W book by Supica and Nahas, your pistol was made in the late '30s. Pre-war production ended with serial number of about 54474 in 1940.

I have one, made a little earlier than yours and enjoy mine quite a bit. Ammo is a little pricey but if you reload, your all set. I cast my own bullets to .360 and shoot it often, just don't reload to hot levels. However, you can load it up to a good home defense gun and I even carry mine concealed on occasion.

You have a beauty there and you should have many years of fun.
