I believe the gen 1's used to say made in Croatia on them. The changed it on later models.

I'm not sure what you're saying. All XD's are made in Croatia. They always have been.

I've owned an XD-40 since 2007. I don't get to shoot as much lately but have approximately 3000 rounds through it. It has been a good gun. I have not shot the SD9 but I believe you would probably be fine with either. It really depends on what you like and want. I have at times thought about picking up either a SD-9 or a G-23 just because I like the size of these guns.
