Can anyone tell me if it is OK to leave a round in the chamber of a S&W SD9 VE. It is going to be used as an around the house defensive gun.

Loaded gun depends on the owners training , confidence and environment . Round chambered with or without safety , empty chamber and racking the slide when needed. If your asking if keeping the pistol loaded for an extended period I don't think it will hurt anything but I'm not an expert. I keep my Shield loaded 8+1 for one or two weeks and functions ok

Yes, it is. The trigger is similar to a glock.

If memory serves there's a drop safety.

We have one. No trigger squeeze, no bang. I'd suggest a holster though.

I have one of these as my truck gun. I keep it with an empty chamber and a fully loaded mag. It only takes a fraction of a second to rack the slide and be ready to shoot. But it should be perfectly safe to leave it with a round in the chamber. Thats the way it was designed.

I keep mine at the ready with one in the chamber. As others have mentioned it isn't going to go off unless the trigger is pulled. I live alone so I don't have to worry about kids or roommates.

I have both Sigmas and an SD model, and I truly feel both types of guns are safe without a manual safety within the parameters of safe gun handling. But are you talking about keeping it in the nightstand or closet with one in the chamber? Notice that I didn't say whether or not it is safe to keep a gun that isn't on your person loaded in such a manner. That's ultimately up to you to decide based on your own situation. But as far as keeping one in the chamber with minimal risk of it being accidentally discharged by a responsible adult, the SD is safer than most non-manual safety pistols I've run into.

And that's a function of the trigger, so many of the people who buy SD's and immediately put a trigger kit in it, well...I don't understand it. They would've been smarter to buy something like a Walther PPX if they wanted something with a noticeably lighter trigger for target shooting. BTW, I personally don't feel the PPX is a good self defense gun as it comes from the factory. A nice gun, but the trigger is too light for a pistol without a manual safety. Not a function of the trigger pull weight, but the nature of the trigger pull.

Thanks for the info everyone. You all have been very helpful. Got the info I wanted.:thumbup::thumbup:

I deal with Evidence guns and the SD and Sigmas are very popular with the bad guys. I have seen some of these guns beat to hell and back and still function. I have also had some that were recovered after being thrown from moving vehicles or thrown during foot pursuits . Those that were thrown did not fire when landing. I did have one that had bent frame rails, but it was thrown from a vehicle that was traveling about 60 MPH and landed in the roadway, and was then ran over by a police car. I was able to get it to test fire.
So the bottom line on these guns is, safe to carry and throw. ;)

My SD9VE has been on the nightstand with a full magazine and a round chambered since I got it in April. The gun has made no attempt to kill or injure anyone in my house. I treat it pretty well as I don’t want to give it a reason to become violent.
