Well I am grateful for your response encouraging me to research my S&W 34 serial number this has lead me to an addition to my firearms library. The Standard Catalogue of Smith & Wesson an extremely informative book that I will put next to The History of Smith & Wesson by Roy G. Jinks on my bookshelf.

The 251764 is .38. The 171596 is .32. I had no idea that caliber made a difference regarding mfg. date.

Every model or at least every frame size family has its own serial number range, starting from 1. If you enter a number on the Colt lookup, you might get a dozen different guns with the same number. You have to know what you are looking at.

The bad news is, .38 Safety Hammerless 251764 is a 5th model which they made from 1907 til 1940.
If you asked on the S&W board, maybe somebody would have a letter on one close to yours.

.32 Safety Hammerless 171596 is a 3rd model as made from 1907 til 1937 but very early in that range, surely before WW I, maybe before 1910.
