Hello,
I have a dumb question about S&W trigger stops.
I was looking at my 14-4, and I noticed it has what I presume to a trigger stop.
Are these adjustable?

Then I noticed that my 15-2 has a slot in the frame for a trigger stop, but no stop. Does this mean that the model 15's started life as a model 14 frame? Why not start as a more common model 10 frame?

And a model 10-8 frame for comparison. bad picture but you can see it has no stop and no slot for a stop. Funny but this is the most "targety" of the target smiths I have, as its a highly customized PPC revolver...but even though a huge bull barrel and target rib were installed, they apparently didn't care about a trigger stop.

Yes, they are adjustable. If you take off the sideplate there is a tiny screw that locates the trigger stop at the top rear of the trigger guard.

If you loosen that screw you can move the stop in or out and then lock it down. Advice? Don't make it so tight that the trigger just barely pulls before the stop. A bit of grit in there and your gun won't fire because the trigger can't go back far enough.

S&W did not include a trigger stop on the M15 because it was designed to be a carry piece. If the stop shifts and the trigger can not cause the hammer to drop, it is not good for the cop or person trying to use it to defend themselves. THe M14 on the other hand was designed and marketed as a Target revolver. A missed shot at a target is merely 10 less points.

And to answer the 3rd part of your question, trigger stops are generally used to limit overtravel of the trigger when used in single action. PPC's generally shot in double action, so there's no need for a trigger stop on a PPC revolver.

My Model 15 (-2, IIRC) had a trigger stop. It may have been added by an enterprising owner prior to me, but it was definitely there and I always assumed that it was put there by the factory.

I have heard from my gunsmith that many were removed when they crumbled and broke, as they occasionally did after decades of service.

My Model 18 has one as well.
The Model 14,15 16,17 & 18 share the same frame because they have a top strap cut for adjustable sights. The Model 10 is a fixed sight gun from the factory.

Apparently at least some of the early, adjustable type, stops worked loose and stopped the guns from firing as S&W issued a warning and supplied replacement stops in the early 80's or so. I know that every one of the members in the PD I worked for back then got free replacements.

Likely that's the reason for the lack of provision for installing one on some guns.

If you truly want a decent stop that is fail proof then fit a rod, cut to length, that just fits inside the recoil block spring. Can't jam and cut properly it'll eliminate excess trigger overtravel.
