Took the 3 revolvers up to the land of turbo coffee yesterday for a check up and tune up. The three guns were a 66, 686, and 340. I was very curious to see what could be done with the scandium and MIM parts as opposed to the old steel internals.

The requested work was to slick the actions on each, smooth out the function of the guns. So some black magic and voodoo was applied along with coffee that kept Keller on the ceiling the whole time, and when it was over, I had three guns that were on par with my Bill Davis PPC gun. Very smooth actions in DA, and a very crisp SA.

No, Tuner, nothing to trade on for the 66. The Missus would not be happy, and if she isn't, nobody is.

Black magic and voodoo indeed. Those wheel guns came out as smooth as any I've ever laid my hands on. And I came home with new knowledge!

John, have you told Old Fuff yet?

Voodoo

I'll tell ya the secret if ya promise not to tell...

When ya'll ran to the bathrooms after the turbocoffee hit, I let the dogs lick the lockwork on those Smiths and slicked'em up nice and sweet. :p
Woof!

Fuff knows...but he ain't talkin' yet. I think he sent the Warthog.

YOU NO-GOOD $#%% PISTOL ARMORER!!

Since when have you started slicking up Smith & Wesson's behind my back !!

Next thing I know you'll start begging hammers and triggers off'en me ...

Since you are clearly in-com-pe-tent to do this kind of work those guns should have been sent to me ...

I would have returned them in 20 or 30 years ... :neener: :D

Beggin'

Fuff screamed:

>Next thing I know you'll start begging hammers and triggers off'en me<
*******************

Well, since you brought it up...

Send me all the good stuff or I'll checker the trigger guard on that pre-war nickel .44 Hand-Ejector... :neener:

YOU'LL WHAT !!! (A-10's on the way ...)

And you can't fool me ... when the Gent's back was turned you soaked his revolver in turbo-coffee and then double-actioned it 500 times. :uhoh:   :D

NOW I WANT ALL OF YOU FOLKS TO KNOW THAT SINCE I'M AN "INDUSTRY PROFESSIONAL" I CAN OUT-TUNE TUNER ANY DAY OF THE WEEK. THE TRICK IS TO LEAVE OUT ALL OF THE SPRINGS (A TECHNIQUE I INVENTED ALL BY MYSELF). THAT WAY THE ACTION IS VERY LIGHT AND SMOOTH, AND YOU CAN SAVE A WHOLE LOT OF MONEY ON AMMUNITION. THIS WORKS PARTICULARLY WELL ON THOSE LITTLE DOUBLE-ACTION ONLY GUNS THAT HAVE INCLOSED HAMMERS BECAUSE YOU CAN'T SEE THE SPUR FLOPPING BACK AND FORTH ... :what:

NOW I SUPPOSE MY MAIL BOX WILL BE FULL OF GUNS FROM ALL OF YOU THAT WANT MY "FST" (FUFF SUPER TUNE) JOB - BUT FORTUNATELY I CLAIM AS OF RIGHT NOW THAT I'M RETIRED - OR WILL BE AS SOON AS THIS POST GETS READ ... :scrutiny: :D

OH ... ! SO NOW I HAVE TO GET A CAT

Fuff. I saw what was actually done. It wasn't the cat's tail that made the difference. It was what the cat failed to clean off of it that was... :uhoh:

Oh ....! Ah ... Well then, do I have to get a cat or not ??? :uhoh:

I know that Tuner has his own special methods ... But ... ??? :scrutiny: :D

Oh ....! Ah ... Well then, do I have to get a cat or not ???

If your neighbors have cats, you can just follow them around until you find out where they like to ... frequent. Then you're good as gold. It may have something to do with their diets though, I hadn't thought of that.

'Tuner, do you give your cats turbocoffee? It's hair seemed a might fluffy...

Industry Professional

OMG Fuff!!! I spit coffee out my nose! Stoppit! One more and my keyboard is gonna short out!! I'm dyin' here...

Okay okay...The secret is in the combined efforts of the dog spit and the cat's tongue...Sorta like a good oil and a smooth mill file...except the "oil" won't kill the file.

There! Now ya know alla mine AND Fuff's wheelgun tunin' secrets! I hope ya'll are happy!

I respect anyone who can do much with a S&W action. After popping mine apart for a good cleaning to fix a binding problem there's not a whole lot to work with and it looks REALLY easy to ruin. Extremely small and tight tolerances. It took me a while to even spot the sear notch on the hammer when I had it apart. At first I thought it was a machining mark!

Marvelous, Mystical, Magical Slurry

Riley pondered:

>I'm wondering if the magic slurry is the secret ingredient?<
********************

I can truthfully say that I did not use any slurry.

Fuff...I'm still crackin' up here. :D

I IS TOO AN EXPERT ... !

An "expert" is somebody that gets paid to make mistakes ... :scrutiny:

I most surely do meet that description ... :uhoh: :D

You can't claim "expert" unless you've got websites linking you to Jeff Cooper, and by extension the good Colonel's endorsement. With or without his knowledge.

Websites

Stoppit! Ya'll are KILLIN' me! :D :D

Fuff...I reckon we gotta get us a bona fide website. :p

Black Snowman...Actually, the Smith & Wesson lockwork responds easily to just a little work. I've been yankin' everybody's chain on the "Big Secret."

Fed had already used the slurry before he brought the gun to me. He PMed
me and said:

"Okay...I slurried the L-frame. What do I do next?" So...he did most of the work before I got my grubby mitts in the gun. We changed the mainspring and rebound spring...polished the rebound slide and the bearing on the sideplate a little...oiled it and slapped it back together. The difference was
like night and day...mainly because the gun was so new, it hadn't had time to really settle things in and get slick the way Smiths will do over time. (I didn't lie! I was honest when I said that *I* didn't slurry it.) :D

He opted not to slurry the scandium J-frame, so we stuck to changing the springs and polishing the above mentioned areas, plus the double-action sear got just a tiny bit of attention.

The K-frame was pretty smooth to start with...so we skipped the slurry on it too. It had a very slight rough spot in DA just at the point of hammer break,
so I smoothed the sear on that one too. Polished the right areas, and Iinstalled one of the three rebound springs that came in the kit with the K-frame...and then I did a little no-no...just to see how it responded. I filed about a half-turn's worth of length off the end of the strain screw. Not enough to cause a problem with the hammer's arc, but enough to lighten the mainspring load a bit. Since it's a range-only gun, I felt okay with it, but fully intend to order the correct parts and do the job over the next time we hook up. It was just an experiment to see how his wife liked the reduced DA pull, and not intended to be permanent, though it would probably be fine left as is.

And now ya know...

RileyMc:

I'LL HAVE YOU KNOW THAT I HAVE HAD THE PLEASURE OF KNOWING COL. COOPER FOR YEARS, AND HE WOULD UNQUESTIONABLY GIVE ME AN ENDORSEMENT ...

But I shutter to think about what he might have to say ... :D
