The Elementum is one of my all time favorite knife designs. Originally done in D2 as a liner lock then a button lock by Civivi, WE (their parent company) took the blindingly successful knife and upgraded it to a Ti framelock, ceramic bearings, S30V flipper...for $175!

I need another production folder like ...welll, like I need another production folder, but a Ti framelock with S30V in a great design is hard to turn down.

I’ve been eyeing that. The Civivi is already top notch. I got my wife the Blade HQ jade g10 with S35 and it’s great, and only $90! I bet the WE will be outstanding.

It looks like the WE is in 20CV which is definitely one of my favorite steels thusly.

I understand how we all have our likes and certain features that wow us. For that reason I don’t judge why guys buy certain knives.

Having said that, I just don’t get the Elementum, as to why is it all the rage? I mean it seems that everyone loves it. I don’t see it, it looks very plain to me.

What am I missing?

I think one factor is the price point for such a good fit and finish. The other is it’s a very neutral design in terms of ergonomics and blade shape, so it fits the role of EDC very well for many people. JMO.

The design has flow and function both. Nothing extraneous. It is elegant, ergonomic, well made in excellent materials. It fits the pocket easily, opens promptly and locks with a satisfying solidity. It fits the hand almost perfectly. It is one of the most perfect flipper pocket knife designs (save for the pocket clip). And the price is remarkably low for all of that in a Ti framelock. Out of the hundreds of knives I own, it is likely to become a daily carry along with my "very plain" SAK Master Craftsman.

Thanks so much SteadyD and hso. Y’all helped me open up my mind.

Sounds like if I just hold one it will speak to me and I’ll understand the love.

Hopefully I’ll come across one in the wild.

Civivi is a brand within WE. They originally came out with the Elementum as a D2 liner-lock and then a Sandvik 14C28N button lock. You can pick whichever since they're about $50 right now (get the button lock since they don't have the issues a liner lock might).

I just talked myself into the brown button lock. (I can quit any time...yeah...a n y t i m e).

I have a Elementum. I like it. What I didn’t like was how easy it was to bend the clip. You link is much better than the more simple one I have.

It ain't my cup of tea, but I'm glad it suits you.

I like the buck 345. Not that there is any comparison of quality and fit and finish of a $30 buck. There are things I don't like about it. But I like the overall size and shape and style. It looks good to me. And it feels good. Even though it's obviously not nearly the same quality.

But I choose a knife first on looks and feel then on features and material.

I've tried a few higher end knives. Bench made 580 and 3310. I liked the 3310 and want another. I've played with a buddies sabenza and microtech and a few others, but only owned those benchmades.

But really, I'm drawn to the style of mostly inexpensive knives. The green handle schrade 141ot, buck 192,110. Case ridgeback. Buck 679,673. They look right to my eye. But it's not the price that attracts me.

Some Randall knives look right to me but I'm not attracted enough to overcome the price.

I own 5 or 6 Civivi knives and would not hesitate to recommend them in their price range. Honestly, I can’t think of any other company that is making something at the quality level they do for the price.

I too need another folder like another hole in the head. Maybe I'll come to my senses. One thing that previously put me off the elementum was what appeared to be square edges on the scales. I tend to favor a more contoured handle.

Thank you for the price info!

I have a standard Civivi Elementum as I mentioned earlier. I got my brother in law one as a gift a short time ago. Mine has the wood handles and the black blade. HSO you got me thinking about one with the extras like in your link. I did order a new clip. Should be in Friday. What I like is that I can carry it all day long without much fuss. It does not have sharp or course edges. So pocket usage is not an issue. It looks nice when your work clothes are business casual. Looks more like a tool than a weapon. Important for the places I have to work.

Once again, this has become an expensive place to hang out. I had just told my better half that I planned to stop spending money.
The elementum was reasonable enough. It's just the other stuff I had to throw in to get "free shipping". :D
