Picked up a SA 1911 Milspec in a trade recently. I've wanted a 1911 for quite some time now, but never found the "right" deal for one. Anyway, I've heard lots of good things here and elsewhere about the SA Milspecs, and came upon a deal I couldn't pass up.

Well, although I was happy with the deal, she still needed a little work. First, the black rubber grips (IMHO) were an eyesore. Next, had some FTE problems that were solved rather readily with a Wilson bulletproof extractor and good mags. (Came with a somewhat spotty Ed Brown mag.) Finally, I didn't have any leather.... :uhoh:

Here is before:

And after:

Upgrades include:
Wilson Bulletproof extractor
2x Chip McCormick Match 8-rd Mags
Mitch Rosen ARG holster
Mitch Rosen dual mag pouch
Wilson blue hex-head grip screws
Rosewood diamond-cut grips

I'm a happy camper now! :D

very nice! I'ts amazing how much a set of nice looking grips can do for the looks of a 1911.
How much did you pay for it, and how many rounds had been through it? If you don't mind me asking of course

Got it in a trade deal, so hard to say exactly what I paid for it, but I'll just say that I was pleased with the deal. As for round count, didn't ask, but apart from the worn extractor it was in fine functional condition and is more accurate than I am.

Good call on the grips (those are my preferred 1911 stocks, myself), they look good, and another good call on the Wilson extractor. Now you just have to watch it closely -- once I got a park'ed Mil-Spec, it got lonely and I ended up having to get a couple more (and a pretty one in stainless) to keep it company ...

You may also want to try the Wilson 47D mags (my Springers seem to prefer 'em); a few bucks more than the CM's, but well worth it, IMO.

It is good looking now. Did you get the original grip safety along with the installed grip safety? I have a Mil Spec, which I got new. I also had to replace the grip safety to avoid hammer bite.

To each his own, but I like the original grips better.

Shiney grips on a matte gun IMHO looks very out of place.

Didn't get the original grip safety. I thought about returning that to original too, but I guess I'm getting used to it.

Wally, variety is the spice of life! ;)
