Over the past two years, I have shipped rifles to manufacturers and gunsmiths for repair, and they have shipped them back to me at my work address. Using my work address assures that someone will be available to sign for the shipment.

My eight-month old ‘new production’ Springfield Armory M1 Garand (one of my five M1’s, but the only SA new production) malfunctioned for the first time last weekend. It ejected three clips with several rounds in them, and then the op-rod jumped the track, and jammed. It wasn’t easy to get the bolt back and the rod loose.

I called SA and told them what happened, and the courteous customer rep suggested that I best return the rifle to them. She then asked whether I would ship the rifle myself, in which case she would give me a return authorization number, or have the gun shop where I bought the rifle ship it for me. If I shipped it, they would ship it back to me directly, but someone would have to be home to sign for it. If the gun shop shipped the rifle, it would be returned to the shop.

I told her that I would ship the rifle myself and request that SA ship it back to me at my work address. She said that by law they could not ship it to my work address. I told her what my experiences had been in the past having other manufacturers and gunsmiths shipping rifles to me at work, but she reiterated that they could only ship it to my home address – by law.

Does anyone have any factual information on this subject?

Thanks!

Alex

What she said is almost correct. SA would have to ship it back to the address that it came from. If you ship from home they would return it to your home. It is simple ship it from your office. I also returned a firearm for warrantee work. I live in and the gun warantee card address is in one state. My office is in another state. It was no problem.

Per Federal Law...

...a firearm (already owned and registered to you) must be shipped back to the address from which it came. If you ship it from work it must be shipped back to the work address.

SO when I went to Fed ex and shipped my CZ pistol from their depot in Newcastle, and then it was shipped to my home address (I don't live at the fed ex depot!!!) federal law was violated??????

Sorry I have to call BS on that story.

Go to the fed ex near you ship it second day air which is less expensive but still has tracking per Fed Ex rules (not a federal law). Put the return address as work with your name on it, and dont discuss it further. You will not be violating any law, and someone will be able to sign for it, which is a safety issue.

Firearms are not registered to a person yet in most states and there is no federal law requireing registration yet unless its a machine gun or NFA.

Per your smart and snotty reply:

You shipped from a Fede-Ex location, BUT, on the the FEDEX SLIP you put your HOME ADDRESS. Which BY FEDERAL LAW is where they must ship it back. (Not the physical location from which you sent it)

THINK before you reply. :banghead:

Can anyone point to the law requiring a firearm to be shipped back to the address it was originally sent from? I can't seem to find it.

§ 178.147 Return of firearm.

A person not otherwise prohibited by Federal, State or local law may ship a firearm to a licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, or licensed dealer for any lawful purpose, and, notwithstanding any other provision of this part, the licensed manufacturer, licensed importer, or licensed dealer may return in interstate or foreign commerce to that person the firearm or a replacement firearm of the same kind and type. See § 178.124(a) for requirements of a Form 4473 prior to return. A person not otherwise prohibited by Federal, State or local law may ship a firearm curio or relic to a licensed collector for any lawful purpose, and, notwithstanding any other provision of this part, the licensed collector may return in interstate or foreign commerce to that person the firearm curio or relic.
