I haven't posted much here, although I read quite a bit. I load a lot of .223, .45, 380, and 7TCU.
My son recived an older 30/30 marlin. Nice gun. He hunts in alabama, short ranges, easy shots, tons of deer (one buck, one doe per day X 30 day season).
He wanted to improve the round and was inspired by the new soft tip round by Hornady. He is loading a much lighter spire tip bullet and putting one in the chamber, one in the magazine. He is down around 140 gr or even 120 gr 30 cal bullet. Neither of us has needed a second shot in years, two in the gun is plenty, and that takes away the concern of a pointey bullet in a tubular magazine.
Yesterday I cleaned out a garage of reloading gear, offered a take it all price, and walked away with a ton of stuff I'll never use. I discovered a box of 30 cal 22 sabots.
I want to load a few for the 308, BUT, what kind of loads is anyone using for both 308, and 30/30?????? I will use the 30/30 round in my contender if I can make an efficient round. that way I can take one barrel in the field for bear, and drop an alternate round in if I see a cougar, since I hunt both at the same time (that is, both season's are open at the same time).
So Is anybody using sabots? I have 40.50 and 55 as well as 75 gr noslers in .224.
thanks

I've loaded 30 caliber to .22 cal sabots in the past and found that you'd be doing great if you can hit the broad side of a barn with them from the inside:what:

Man, I wish I could remember where I saw it, I belong to like 12 reloading forums so its kinda hard to keep track but someone just posted on one of them about a website that sells the components and has load data. I'm betting if you google sabot and 30 cal you would find them in there somewhere. FWIW, the other guy said they suck too.

I tried them about 15 years ago and they were miserable in the accuracy department. I was loading them in 30-06 and there was no telling where they were going to land. But they got to wherever they decided to hit really, really fast........

Hope this helps.

Fred

Well, that's about what I thought. especially regarding the marketed stuff. They just aren't out there, and that is a sure sign no-one was buying them. I did shoot a box of those 30-06/22 loads, hit the gallon antifreeze bottle dead center every time, and 300 yards, so they weren't THAT bad.
I think I want to try them in a 30/30, but need some load data. If we can use the 75 gr Nosler Balistic tips, and keep them within a "minute of deerbody", that should be good.
Any load data would be appreciated.
