Sabots For My Old Army Bullets

I have a .50 cal Lyman's and would like a sabot (.458") that I will be able to use my Old Army pistol bullets in (.454"-.459"). I tried sabots for .45 pistol bullets, but they won't push down the bore.

So who makes them?

What is the twist in your Lyman rifle?

If the bore is smaller than normal then you can try:

I was told from a dealer that the Harvestor sabots (two that handle .45 cal) would work. Their info was sketchy so I emailed Harvestor. They said that they were not .458" caliber, but that some people had luck using them that way. They were very nice and sent me a small trial pack to see. They didn't work.

My twist is 1:48".

I've seen one brand that made .458" sabots, but couldn't figure who it was, and a Google search wasn't providing much. I believe it may have been the mmp sabots.

Is using a sabot in a percussion revolver a safe thing to do? I've never tried it, and I would be worried about a piece of sabot peeling off as the projectile enters the barrel and creating an obstruction for the next shot.

Or maybe I am just overly cautious. Or whatever...

It's for my .50 cal rifle using the bullets I have for my Old Army. They run anywhere from .453" to .460" with most being .454-.456".

I doubt a sabot would work well, but who knows.

I'll mostly use RB's in my rifle, but I think it makes some sense to be able to share bullets with my pistol as well. Especially when I get a longer barrel to drop into my stock with a Malcolm style scope attached for hunting beyond 75-100 yds, which would be with a conical or bullet to help me fight the wind better. Fair at judging distance, but not so much with wind speed/drift.

I'm not sure but I think that orange or yellow-colored sabots are for .458 bullets. The black MMP sabots should work with anything under .456. A little tight maybe but you don't know until you shoot them and see their accuracy.
1:48 is what my Hawken has and it only likes .50 cal. Maxi-balls.

Bee a while since I messed with sabots but don't the regular ones use pistol bullets in the 451-452 range?

Check out this website, i buy stuff for my savage smokeless muzzle loader from him.
Click on the order page and in the 50/45 sabot and bullet listing he sells a Harvester black crush rib sabot that's supposed to work with .454-.457 bullets.

I think those are the sabots they sent me to try. They said it has worked for some. I guess my bore is too tight, and the bullet too large (.459").

I do want to try out those mmp orange sabots I suppose. Not sure what I'll end up settling on.

myself ive only seen basically 2 types of sabots for 50 cal rifle use.those that accept 44 bullets, .429 and those that accept 45 bullets .452. the ruger old arrmy has a bore that shoots best with .457 bullets.im not aware of a sabot that would allow you to shoot these in a 50 cal rifle. but it may be out there.
