It was run over... and the stock is broken at the wrist. Not cracked..BROKEN! It wouldn't take much to just have two pieces. I'm sick! The case it was in was a good one, just not stout enough for that truck!

So. What is my best chance for replacement? Should I call Winchester? Will they even be able to help? Should I start checking the other stock makers?

I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

Firstly, make sure the rifle is not a total loss. Ive come across several bolt guns which had been run over by pickup trucks and visually looked fine but upon further inspection had bent barrels and stuck actions, striped out scope mount holes, etc.

If the truck only ran over the rearmost section of the stock then I would say you are fine but if it ran over the action there could be irrepairable trouble.

Even so, the stocks are available here and there as was noted in the above post.

My sympathy goes out to you. I would find a good gunsmith(Frank Hoster) in Gallatin comes to mind. He has a lot of experience in restoring old guns and making beautiful stocks. On the bright side, it is a good opportunity to customise a classic rifle.

Good luck,

ts

I don't know what your budget is but some of the originals and customs can get pricey. Boyd's makes a pre 64 stock for around $100. I've used their Mosin and Mauser stocks and have good luck with them. They may not be as pretty as some of the others but for a hunting rifle they work well. Sorry for your loss.

Winchester doesn't exist anymore, so there's no point in calling them...

BUT, have you tried Numrich Arms?

Thanks for the info guys. Brother in law did the deed. He doesn't even know it. :uhoh: The gun is my sisters...she took 100 deer with it before she stopped hunting. The rifle was a gift from her (fourth) husband. I'm pretty sure she will not be a player re: those $1500 stocks. :what: I'll check gunbroker and E-bay...we'll find something to make it shootable again.:D

The damage to the case seemed to be right at the wrist of the stock. I cycled the action several times...smooth as glass. I could see no bends or damage to any metal or the scope. I will look again more closely. The break is such that fireing check cannot be done safely. I could pull a bullet and fire a primer to see if it functions

Thanks for taking the time to give your input. We will start the search soon.

hardtarget, is the rifle a featherweight? I have a really good featherweight stock that I will sell at a good price. Send me a personal message if you're interested. BW

Not cracked..BROKEN! It wouldn't take much to just have two pieces.
I would like to see a good photo of the break from both sides.

In many cases a nearly invisible repair can be done using Brownell's AcraGlas, and a steel, aluminum, or carbon fiber reinforcement pin hidden under the grip cap.

It would be stronger then it was before it got overrun.

I can't recommend any of these companies as I have never done business with any of them.
Just food for thought on what can be successfully repaired.

Wow! Y'all are right on this. The rifle is about 40 miles from me so I'll call my sis to see if she knows more info on the rifle. I get to see it again this weekend. There are details I don't know. I only got to look at it maybe five minutes. I'll get back to you very soon.

Be sure and keep all the splinters, chips, and chunks.

If you go that direction, it would make a repair easier, and less visable.

CDNN was selling Winchester New Haven spare parts they bought when the factory was shut down. they might still have some left. I got a Featherweight stock for my CZ model 3 a while back from them.

I just got a 1953 M70 308 for $400 at a gun store with almost no use, because someone broke the wrist of the stock early on.
